I definetly have a prefered orientation (of the pitch!) but will leave my opinion off for now....

Lengthways only! Bloody FUMBBLers... If I ever have to play side on, I always move the play to my side...

Brain just can't compute 'fumbbl style'. Pretty much always lose that way.
I have also seen 2 coaches playing sat side by side!

I want an option between the first two. 'I always want it longways but will play sideways if my opponent looks like they will cry if I don't let them play that way.'

I've played sidesaddle at the NAF Champs before - but that was because my back was killing me reaching over the deep table and I was on the end of an aisle of tables.

Yeah, I'd choose that instead of the second option.
Waaaaaay back we started sideways, btw. Even went so far as changing halves halfway through the game
Not everything was better in the good old days I guess.

Let them cry. If it helps me win, I'll take it.

Looks like you're getting the hang of childcare!

We've mainly played lengthways. Sideways didn't seem to bother me too much on Fumbbl. Itchen's comment cracked me up, because I can't imagine both people playing sideways on the same side. Though, that's technically what you're doing in Fumbbl too.
Great poll question. Having played on the newer, larger pitches, I have to say playing lengthwise can be a challenge. Luckily we had it set up so I could easily walk around to the side and get a better view, move my minis, etc. I imagine there are also times where table length/space/orientation just doesn't allow lengthwise play (especially with the new pitches). But yea, my pref will always be lengthwise as it's less confusing whose end zone is whose.

Can be either for me never quite understood the hard core one way only folks but they may have more years playing in a specific orientation to get acclimatized.
What's going to work just depends on the size of your pitch and width of tables. Newer pitch is larger then the old and in some cases doesn't fit in some orientations. In those cases I don't love reaching across the length of the table in the vertical orientation but can do it.

I definitely prefer the end on way of playing. When I was a teenager in the 90s I often played on a bedroom floor with space constrained it was normally sideways, but now being a little older it is not likely I will be sitting on a floor playing this game. On a table I really dislike from the side . I think the difference was playing on the floor from the side you actually have a more birds eye view which makes judging positions easier at a glance than on a table where things are hidden from view slightly. Although this happens lengthways too, I find it easier because in most situations you are defending across the field.

I guess this would be my choice too.

I'm so used to the BB2 standard offset to 45 degrees that it doens't really bother me which way around I have the physical board. I quite like having it sideways, because then I can reach the other side of it to shift my models around. Although I do appreciate the Lengthways option for a good tournament. Makes it feel more like an invasion game, when you're actively crossing onto their side of the table or vice-versa.
In short. Sideways for practicality, lengthways for competative play.

Whut? Isn't BB2 lengthways?
