this question went through my head today : what's the origin of NAF in BB fluff ?
Cant find my st ed rulebook but Im fairly certain Nuffle appears on the very first page
What about the Nuffle Amorican Football acronym though ?
where and when did it appear first ?

Page 35 onwards for fluff. However Nuffle Amorical Football is first printed on page 36, paragraph 2;

And so it was that the first game of Nuffle Amorical Football, as it
soon became known, took place. A pig’s bladder was inflated,
much to the pig’s consternation we must add. Armour was taken
from the temple, and placed on chosen warriors from either side.
The teams lined up, a shaman ‘referee’, dressed in fresh zebra
skin for the occasion, blew a whistle and the game was away.

...and the fans went wild !

I should mention that quote is from the current book. The 1st ed you ask about in the OP might have been different.

The NAF was also mentioned in a similar fashion in the 2nd Edition rulebook (or the supplementary handbook).

According to this link it also has been around in 1st Ed.

The passage that Lunchmoney quoted is almost identical to the NAF's first mention on page one of 1st Ed. Midway through the usual story, it's: "So it was that the first game of Nuffle Amorical Football took place." One notable difference is that the discovery of the rules and the first "modern" game actually take place in Amorica, whereas in the current version Amorica is just the historical land where football was originally played.

I get that it's a joke based on British slang, but I usually find the acronym fairly embarrassing to explain.
