My road to the 24...

'Doing the 24' blog
For a while I have been meaning to start a record of my route to doing the 24 races at NAF tournaments, I did think of it a while ago I'm sure but must give a nod to Sann0638's blog on his path giving me inspiration to finally get this done.

I'm not even going to pretend that I will get this all done really soon but I will keep updating it as I go.

The pictures for each team are how they look now, I always try to get my team painted for an event and generally get stuff done but not always, the Norse are a good example. When they went to Poo Bowl they were base coloured and based but didn't have any washes. They are now washed and shaded in some cases through use in league, as Chaos Mauraders and a trip to Speedbowl

Exiles 2010 - Lizardman 3-1-2
Image
0-2 vs Lycos, Necromantic
4-0 vs Beastboy, Lizardmen
4-1 vs Diamond_Joe_Quimby, Goblin
1-1 vs Buggrit, Norse
1-3 vs Glowworm, Dark Elf
3-0 vs darfed, Chaos Pact

My first trip to a NAF tournament was a visit down to Lunchmoney and the Exiles. Some of my main memories of this are my first ever block in a tournament being quad skulls against Lycos, things could only get better. I was also in the same hotel (sharing a bathroom) with Buggrit, we got some very funny looks at breakfast :)

I was happy with a 3-1-2 record at my first tournament, I didn't really appreciate that I had taken a strong team and that it would a while before I saw 3 wins at a tournament again...

Poo Bowl 5 - Norse 1-2-4
Image
0-2 vs Besters, Orc
0-2 vs Wilzif, Humans
0-2 vs vmcat, Undead
1-3 vs Hudson, Norse
1-1 vs Geospencer88, Elves
1-1 vs Oly1987, Humans
3-0 vs Shaniepoo1, Dwarves

Having played in a local non-NAF tournament and have things go OK I was reasonably confident going up to Loughborough. Unfortunately my faith was misplaced; I basically spent the first few games getting my ‘donkey’ kicked repeatedly. Second day was much a little better but still had a loser take all game against Shanie for the spoon, in which I had the good fortune of help him increase his cutlery collection.

Poo Bowl was a great tournament I put a lot of faces to names I had seen on various forums. It was really social and a great tournament to attend even if my results sucked. At least I didn't come last.

The NAF Championships - Orcs 2-0-4
Image
0-1 vs Sann0638, Undead
2-0 vs Mrs Xod, Orc
0-2 vs Sillysod, Humans
2-1 vs 89er, Orc
0-2 vs Mattwhile, Dwarves
0-4 vs Rodders, Skaven

This was the big one, one of the main reasons I had played a couple of tournaments was because I had wanted to go to 'The Bloodbowl' but didn't want to turn up as a complete noob with regards to tournament play. As was already becoming apparent I not only enjoyed the game itself but collecting the teams and painting them. It must have been about this point that I realised was probably going to keep on with different teams until I had done all of them, so might as well just do one tournament and go on to a different team. I had my head turned by my first visit to Warhammer World and seeing so many Blood Bowl boards and coachs in one place at one time, having met the HATE guys Diamond Joe et al at Exiles and Poo Bowl I knew a few faces. I think if I had not been paired against Mrs Xod who had her (3rd?) game EVER! against me I would have lost three that day. Also probably shouldn't have gone to Rock City on the Friday night :)

Given the coaches I came up against, my still relavitive inexperiance and just getting 2 wins rather than the one I had at Poo Bowl I was OK with the result. I loved going to Warhammer World for the first time and will always remember my first NAFC.

Exiles 3: The Rise of the Cheerleaders - Humans 2-2-2
Image
1-1 vs Dimond Joe Quimby, Lizardmen
2-1 vs Eski, Humans
2-4 vs Giraffe, Skaven
0-2 vs Lycos, Orc
3-3 vs DieselUK, Skaven
2-0 vs Darkson, High Elves

With the arrival of my first little one in June I had had some time off tournaments (including missing my local clubs first tournament Gert Bowl) having had so much fun the year before and with the added bonus of prizes for wearing a short skirt and a bra off I went to see Al and his fellow cheerleaders at Poole.

I have loved every Exiles tournament I have been to and this was no exception. Also note worthy as the start of a run where Eski and I (clubmates at Vanguard) would alternately dice each other. Unfortunately for Steve as far as NAF ranking go, I would dice him at tournaments and he would dice me in the local league.

Given the tournament set up I decided to trade the usual Ogre speedbump in and take Zug, he was really good fun but not really sure that he was worth the extra money over an Ogre. I had a nice mix of people I had met before and 'famous' names on the scene i.e. 'Thrud Bowl' Frank and 'ARBBL Spam God' Darkson

NAFC 2012 - Undead 2-1-3
Image to follow...

0-0 vs Slinky78, Chaos Dwarf
1-3 vs Omake, Skaven
2-0 vs Lordillo, Humans
0-1 vs Soward, Orc
1-2 vs Deadwannabe, High Elves
2-0 vs PCha, Underworld

So now I was an old hand on my second visit to the spiritual home of Blood Bowl and was even more fun the second time around. I was starting to recognise some faces and be able to chat and in some cases even catch-up. I actually find it had to remember most of the games. The one that sticks in my mind was the loss to the H Elfs. I recall lots of BS elf plays with Dragon Warrriors dodgeing through 2 TZ on multiple occasions.

In one of those long-term revenage senarios Lordillo got his revenge with Khemri against my Undead in the 'Road to the NAF Championship' on FUMBBL in 2015 :)

Gert Bowl II - Chaos 4-0-2
Image

2-0 vs TomClark, Dwarves
1-0 vs Nazgob, Vampires
0-3 vs Hungdonkeyman, Amazons
0-2 vs Armydave, Chaos Pact
2-1 vs Buggrit, Goblins
4-1 vs SFisher91, Ogre

This was my first NAF Bristol Tournament I could get to (but only the 2nd one anyway :)) Played another Bristol coach to start the day, Tom was just starting what turned out to be a more than reasonable successful career with Blood Bowl Dwarves and couldn't keep up with Chaos. A couple of memorable points, ArmyDave managed a T1 touchdown by 'Blitzing' at the KO throwing a Gobbo over the top, catching in the backfield and a failed blitz letting the Gobbo go in. He had already managed a T0 TD wit the same trick when the ball scattered into the EZ. Was very happy to get 4 wins in a tournament, wouldn't happen again for a while.

Albion Coast Cup VIII - Dark Elves 3-0-3
Image
1-2 vs Ceetee, Elves
4-0 vs AngryHobbit, Halflings
3-0 vs Boldur, Amazons
0-2 vs Lycos, Dwarves
1-3 vs Lemf, Wood Elves
2-0 vs Cyrus-Havoc, Chaos Dwarves

Flame Bowl IV - High Elves 3-0-3
Image to follow...

1-2 vs Barney_the_Lurker, Elves
0-2 vs miserable, Dwarves
0-2 vs Purplegoo, Undead
3-2 vs muttley, Humans
4-0 vs Schmee, Khemri
2-0 vs Fireolli, Lizardmen

Terrific idea and well executed! Keep them coming!

Having just shocked the world (joking) by playing Dark Elves in a tournament (not joking), I am now entertaining thoughts of "hitting for the cycle" so to speak and playing all 24 races* in tournaments. You have helped inspire me!

Well done again, sir!

*(I played the Simyin/Apes of Wrath roster in a tournament, so I might get to 25!)
