R.O.A.D. Scholars: the sadness of being an unwanted star

Despite well intentioned attempts to give each race access to 6 star players, in a range of costs, some stars seem destined for merely "color commentary" with Snotgrub....

Pick a race and comment on the players you absolutely not use and why.... I'll start with necros:

120k Hack n Slash fragile and worth it as chainsaws can potentially take out anyone....

180k J Earlice, a fast catcher on a team without a dedicated passer?! Glass jawed and IF passed to would probably eat team spp.... Would rather have an igor and bloodweiser buddy.... Despite acquiring a model for him I know he will never be called upon.... NOT WORTH IT....

220k Setekh I want to like him, though break tackle on a 4 St piece is marginal, BUT we are in Wizard money now or Igor and double blood buds.... Though he is built for mayhem and that is useful in funneling spp to your scorers.... Still NOT WORTH IT....

240k Wilhelm Chaney Switch catch and wrestle for block and piling on and I would gladly play underdog... :orc:
Until then, W.C. just stands for Water Closet and Chaney will rarely pull his furry arse off the toilet.... Three competent werewolves would be a treat, but he is still NOT WORTH IT....

380k Ramtut III On the fence since playing this far down is folly and I could afford lots of swag for that price.... Wrestle was, and is, a stupid nerf.... Used him only once in 20+years....

390k Count Luthor Drackenborg I just can't get down for the Count and have never played as that much of an underdog.... On the fence for this one, also, and have never used him....

So that's one star out of six with a snowball's chance in the face of the sun to see regular duty.... NOT very helpful....

Fast moving ST4 Frenzy players with built in protection against rolling a 1/9 are rubbish aren't they...?

Looks like you missed your chopper, again, ace.... Didn't say "rubbish", said I wouldn't take him over the more useful inducements DESPITE wanting to like him....

Two constructive discourses would have been either to wax eloquently on why the star is better than the inducement set, OR enrich the thread by giving a race with analysis of star player usefulness....

Maybe the chopper will return....

Goblin Star Players available for Inducement:
Bomber Dribblesnot (6237 Loner, Accurate, Bombardier, Dodge, Right Stuff, Secret Weapon, Stunty, 60k)
Fungus the Loon (4737. Loner B&C, Mighty Blow, No Hands, Secret Weapon, Stunty, 80k)
Nobbla Blackwart (6237 Loner, block, Dodge, Chainsaw, Secret Weapon, Stunty, 130k)
Scrappa Sorehead (7327, Loner, Dirty Player, Dodge, Leap, Right Stuff, Sprint, Stunty, Sure Feet, Very Long Legs, 150k)
Ripper (4619, Loner, Grab, Mighty Blow, Regen, Throw Team Mate, 270k)
Morg 'N' Thorg (66310, Loner, Block, Mighty Blow, Thick Skull, Throw Team Mate 430k)

Bomber - Yes please, if you like bombs. Personally I dont take him, yes he's cheap, but bombs are such a hit and miss affair that even when playing with the randomness that is goblins, I dont like it.

Fungus - My go to guy of choice if I have at least 80k. Potential chaos and carnage with 4 (plus GFI) MB blocks a turn. At the very least the opponent stays out of his way giving you room to play.

Nobbla - another player of choice for me, though plays a second fiddle to Fungus due to cost. If I have an opponent where I think I should get a long drive then a blodging 'saw is great fun.

Scrappa - Damn is this guy useful, but it irks me a little that I am playing for the Dirty Player skill that I am never going to use; wont risk getting him sent off.

Ripper - If I'm getting this much in inducements I am sure I am big trouble. I would have spent the first 150k on bribes, then the next 100k or so on Fungus or Nobbla, then maybe 100k on Dirty Tricks to try to take out opposing stars. So wont see much play from me.

Morg - ditto from Ripper.

Of course this is assuming League play. In tourney I might take Ripper or even Morg :)

Chaney is a fab inducement at 240K. Easily able to compete with the Wizard + Apo/Reroll combo. As Don indicated, a ST4 player with Wrestle is a great piece to have for up to 16 turns.

Thanks, Joe, that is a little clearer, though my counter would be that wrestle doesn't overcome the frenzier's bugagboo of not having block, and Chaney will catch a boot as soon as he goes down (admittedly a running argument in whether or not to give piling on/wrestle to on roster wolves).... Though objection noted.... :)

Lunchmoney: The goblins do have a good selection of maximum mayhem on the low end of the cost spectrum, and you hit the nail on the head that you want bribes to keep them on field.... Our local gobbo player lowballs to get more inducements, would that change your mind about Ripper? He's a pretty gnarly Troll on his own....

Yeah, Morg is an overpriced whore....

So gobbos are running about 50-67 percent effective stars....

I would say Gobbos have the biggest selection of useable Stars, hence why I chose them for a post.
The other Stars get too expensive, I think. Once you hit 200k inducements I am generally looking to do some damage to the opponents team to bring them down in TV (this is just my style, there are others in my league who say taking an expensive star (Skitter for EG) will help you win the game, and though he may soak up SPPs you'll be in a better postion in future games).

For goblins I would only really ever consider Fungus and Ripper (unless the TV gap was obscene)
130TV for Blodge Chainsaw is far too much especially as he's not far off a 1 in 6 of taking himself out each turn.

Ripper is awesome, absolutely awesome. For 270TV you get a non-stupid, non-hungry quarterback that can 3d block with 1 assist.
A goblin team that can have 3 trolls, 2 balls n chains, a wizard and bribes can mess up many a good team.

Sure that's a large TV gap, but in league play it's not that rare.

As for the rest, Bomber, Scrappa & Morg, I'd only consider Morg and only if I already had induced Ripper.
