Opinions on what I've just run into....

The local GW league is starting (on short notice) and isn't quite straight line BB.... :-?

I'd like thoughts, agreements and criticisms (and especially analysis) on how this will affect play and the league.... All I've ever played is straight, current BB, sans calling IPs and using time limits....

From an email this morning:

Welcome sports fans, players, and coaches to the challenge of the
Khemri Cup! For those who may be wondering, way down south and just east of
Araby is a great desert. Ruins of huge pyramids and cities of the living
dead are scattered across the landscape. Lucky for us all, Blood Bowl
pitches can still be found in this "Land of the Dead". There are few things
the ancient Tomb Kings like as much as the glory to be found on the pitch!
Until now there have been few Khemri teams seen in the Old World. Change is in the air though. The Kings of Old are determined to once again prove their superiority on the field and have issued a challenge to all. Come on down to Khemri and may the best team win!!!

Kick-Off!!!
The league will begin on January 7th. The regular season will run through
Tuesday February 4th. Games played on the 3rd and 4th of February will
count towards the Grandmasters tournament also as long as both players are signed up for that week of the Grandmasters. League nights will be Tuesday, but players may come in and play games other days/nights of the week if they can get an opponent. The Khemri Cup will be played on February 11th at 6:30pm. The players involved will be the leading coaches from each division (see below).

Rules:
Coaches will begin with 1,000,000 gold pieces to build their teams. All
rules from the Blood Bowl Handbook will be used unless noted otherwise by
the League Commissioner(LC). Note that pages 37-44 contain league rules and guidelines. The following changes will be made to those rules:

1. May only hire one star player as a freebooter before matches. Goblin
teams may hire one additional star player if both stars carry secret
weapons.

2. Legal teams are those in the BB Handbook, Khemri & Necromantic Undead from BB Mag. #3, and the Vampire Team from BB Mag. #4.

3. Any games played beyond 6 per week (Sun-Sat) are practice games and do not count for skill improvement, earnings, injuries, etc. If one player
has more that 6 and the other has less than 6, the player with less than 6
will still count the game towards his weekly eligible games.

4. All players will be split into two divisions by the LC. This list will
be available in the store on January 7th.

Roster Sheets:
You should bring in TWO roster sheets for your team. These MUST be the
rosters provided with the game. If you do not have them there will be
plenty of extras available in the store. One will be kept on file in the
store and the other is yours to use during games. The store copy is the
official copy, so make sure you get a staff member to update it after each
game for you. Any descrepancy in rosters will default to the store copy.

Teams:
Painted Citadel or Maurader models of the race or races used on the team
must represent all players and coaching staff, except head coach and
cheerleaders. Head coaches do not require models (though you can do one if you wish) and cheerleaders must be represented, in spirit with your team, by appropriate models. If you do not have a model then that player/staff has missed this game. All teams must be named and all players must have a name.

Of Note:
The following are a few changes from the last edition of Blood Bowl or
things that can be easily overlooked so I've made a quick list.
1. Use the injury table on page 11, not the one listed on the quick
reference sheet.
2. Big Guys may not use team re-rolls, but may use Leader or bonus re-rolls.
3. Be aware of the Conceding the Match rules on page 44. They will be used.
4. Wizards may only be hired as freebooters and are not half price.
5. Big Guy star players don’t count toward the teams big guy allowance.
6. Re-rolls cost double once the league begins (so gett’um while they’z
cheep!).
7. You may not play the same person more than twice in a row.
8. Each players turn has a 4 minute time limit.
9. All advancement rolls must be made in the presence of your opponent or
a GW staff member.

TBH this sounds very appropriate for a store run league. They are doing a quick start up, loose schedule, allowing experimental teams, and also you can use the Marauder line of minis.

If I were single, had money to burn, and no responsibilities this might be a fun league to play in.

But this league lacks the fun of playing at a friend's house.

Where are you? Just out of curiosity

Uhhhh ... what did I miss. This appears to be the normal rules used by every official GW BB league I've ever seen.

Allowing the experimental teams is no big deal (even if I think they have problems), and adding in the clarification from the 2002 Rules Review is to be expected.

Looks like a normal everyday GW BB league, I'd play in it in a heartbeat.

But I am curious what makes you say its not straight line BB ... didn't see anything in there that is not straight line GW tournament rule BB (other than the 3 experimental teams and those don't count as exceptions in my world).

"Wizards may only be hired as freebooters and are not half price".

Are they saying 150,000 to freeboot a wizard? :o

Therein lies the rub!, and the reason I'm plumbing for opinions and information.... I've never been in anything other than a casual "league"....

(For all of those wishing to know, the league is in Duluth/Norcross, GA. This is ~20 miles north of downtown Atlanta....)

"Mainstream BB" would be straight out of the manual, IMHO.

Just curious about the deviations from the rulebook and what it means in terms of adjustments in play, etc....

For example: DeathWing noticed that they apparently are discouraging the use of Wizards.... Not mainstream... I would think....

In any event, perhaps I have nothing to worry about... or I do.... This is why I ask....

I'd join like a shot. Never used a wizard, and only freebooted a star in the last round of our league.

Now why can't the stores round here have a league like this? :pissed:

I think this is more in the way of a typing error that I'd need to ask the commish about. Say wizards are only freebooters ... well that's straight out the rule book.

What I read this as was this:
If you don't know the new rules the old rules were wizards were 150k. Now wizards can only be freebooted but lets say all you know is the freeboot normal rules which is half price so you'd think 75k right. I think the not half price is meant to mean that they are 50k not 75k ... in other words I think this is simply an error of omission not a rules change.

When I read the rules listed, the only difference from straight out the rulebook that I can see are the 3 experimental teams. If I'm missing something extra please point me to it as I'm missing it. The 3 experimental teams are not really a big deal (again I think the Khemri and Vampire teams are broken on the too good side in terms of overall balance, but other than that). Normal GW sponsered leagues requires official minis so thats normal and the other rules are right out the LRB or the 2002 Rules Review as far as I can tell.

We all need more stores like this one! Those rules are fine.

Other than the restrictions on stars and the use of experimental teams, this seems like what a regular BB league looks like to me. Don't have a GW store nearby, so I'm thinking of starting my own league at local game store, probably will use rules very close to these.

When they say teams from the rulebook are allowed, do they refer to the printed book, or LRB. Amazons and Lizards are not in the printed book.

I think another omission....

One of the store trolls was going to bring amazons... and they specifically told me NO nun/bunny teams because they were from another company (shrug)... I told them their zon figs sucked... but no budging... eh, it IS their store....

Though not statistically significant (30+ responses), it seems a clear consensus that this is an ok set-up.... Cool....

===========

So, can anyone send me a url for the undeaders that I might face? I'm sorry to hear that they are considered "broken" as I'll have to face every timmy powergamer with enough brains to gravitate that way....

I'll give it the labrat try, though, as it's rumored to be a basher league.... Yeah, I'm-a-gonna go Skaven especially since I'm finishing the paint jobs on my second edition minis.... :D

Thanks for the comments, fellow BBers.... Now I go to sacrifice to The Great Rat God!!! We'se gonna need it.... :o

What I don't like is that you can play more games than someone else by playing more games in the week. That makes some players stronger.
As far as would I play? Hell its game thats what its for to play!. However it is a little lop-sided

The "rulebook" for BB includes the last Annual (2002 currently). Fanatic has been very specific about this. That has in it the Amazon, Norse, and Lizardman teams so they would be allowed.

Mojo ... my biggest concern for this league would be two different teams.

1) The Khemri team that is smart enough to start Mummy heavy and give them Piling On (NOT block) for their 1st skill .... Dangerous Dave did this in the MBBL and starting tearing teams apart. His team led to our current test rules where the Mummies lost MB for FA and the 2 other positional players were axed to AG 2.

2) The Vampire team run by a smart player who can get in 6 games a week. This team needs cash before its broken qualities show up. A player with enough time on their hands and some ability to play will create a pretty deadly team with the reduced negative OFAB in the new rules.

The Necro team is a joke so its not really a threat at all. As for not freebooting more than one star ... heh ... that really wasn't a thread anyway with the current cash tables.

Anyway have fun with the Skaven, its looks like a good league.
