Daftest team roster question ever?

Post by outcast »

OK, please bear in mind that I've only played one game of BB so far and have spent far too long reading and thinking about it!

If I create a team roster with a view to joining a local league etc. am I limited to only 12 players as I only have 12 minis (from the box set)? Or is it acceptable to say "right, my No.7 has been killed so my No.16 is coming on in his place... but wearing the No.7" :)

Just wondered how you guys do it or whether I ought to find myself some more figs?

Thanks

It all 'depends'.

If you where playing mates outside of a tournament I'm sure people would be happy with any solution you came up with. Whether it was using an incorrect model as a proxy (this zombie is a wood elf lineman for this game) or using an empty base or token (although this gets confusing when the base gets knocked down or stunned).

If you wanted to game at tournaments or probably even in a shop with someone you didn't know so well I'd say its a no go.

Have a look on eBay or post in our Models for Sale section if you want something specific. You can get pretty much anything you need for a decent price. Depending on the models you need, it's sometimes even cheaper to pick up a bargain second GW box set off eBay, keep what you need, then sell the rest as single figures!

The main problem with what your wanting to do in 'serious' games is that if you have to field both players at once (The real and the proxy) due to deaths/KO's/Sending Offs, then it could be quite confusing and be seen that you are trying toi get an unfair advantage, which I assume isn't the case?

What models are you looking for in particular out of interest?

Well, at the moment I only have the 12 orcs and 12 humans that come with the 3rd Ed box set. I am in the process of painting them up and probably a long way off being ready to start playing "serious" games but my wife and I were going to put together proper team rosters so that we could start to get the hang of SPPs and so on... which is when the question occurred to me.

The problem at the moment is that I don't have enough experience to know what positions I would want to fill up my 16 with, and therefore, what extra figs I need to pick up. I probably need a few more games to start getting a feel for this.

The box teams are fine to get started with. For the Humans you'll want an Ogre and an extra two Blitzers to get all the models you'd need for a tournament or league play. Maybe you'd want more than two Catchers, but I doubt I'd ever bother personally.

The Orcs are the ones that need a bit of work doing! They'll need another two Black Orcs and another two Blitzers to make four of both, the core of that team. A Troll and an optional Goblin make up the rest.

If you're sticking to the basic teams from the box you can pick these up off ebay for next to nothing if you're patient. There are a shed load of manufacturers making Ogres and Troll too, so give yourself a budget and wait or go 'Buy it Now' to get straight into the fun.

Good luck!

Brilliant! Thanks for the tips.

I can't wait to get properly stuck into this game - from the limited exposure I've had, I know I'm going to get totally hooked!

(You forgot to tell us if you have any mates that already play, but I'll just assume you don't.)

Alternatively, you could use the teams as they are (before investing more money), and have a few games with your friends, to start learning how the game works, and to get to know the different playstyle of the teams you have from the box.

In no time you'll find that their skills and stats will induce you to play the game in quite different ways, and with that notion in mind, you'll look at the rulebook and notice there are many other teams with (almost) just as many ways to score and play/win your games.
By then you'll be able to do a more conscientious choice of either sticking with those two teams (and filling up the positionals that are missing) or have a go with a different team with a playstyle you feel that suits you better.

Oh, and welcome aboard (forum and game wise)!
:)

For cheap painted figures, your local shop might have Reaper trolls and such. For a few bucks, it's a fully painted big guy.

Daftest team roster question ever?

I have another daft question to follow your daft question: which rules are you using? The ones in the box are out of date, you'll need to get hold of the Blood Bowl CRP for the latest incarnation.

Shteve-O makes a great point! I wholeheartedly second his endorsement of the newest ruleset, LRB6.0, that can be downloaded for free. I think it is the best ruleset the game has ever had.

Kilowoggy also makes a great point - the Reaper line of Legendary Encounters pre-painted minis is a great way to grab some BB players - I love their Troll, best Troll out there for the price, as well as their Goblins, Kobolds (Snots or Flings?), Knights (Humans), the one Dwarf (cool, but only one kind), and others.

Welcome to Blood Bowl!

welcome to BB

I would check sites like ebay or one of the other fine sites out there for more figures to round out your teams

Daftest team roster question ever?

Post by outcast »

Thanks for all the great tips, guys and the warm welcome!

Shteve0, yes I have the CRP but thanks for checking :)

I am hoping to get both my wife and my Memoir'44 buddy hooked as I can see that BB is a game that's at it's best when there is player/team development... That said, I had an absolute blast playing a game "out if the box"!

Thanks for the info on minis, I'll check out the Reaper stuff.
