Choosing skills

Does anyone miss the old 2nd ed. random skill generation?

I personally prefer the system we have now, but wonder what other coaches think.

I voted for the 3rd edition system too... Basically because if i try to imagine a player earning spp, I think he succeded in game (interception, blocks, throws in, ...) because he has worked a lot before in order to succed in those actions (huuu... 1 am in France, not really clear ;) ). So it's a choice form his coach > the coach should decide.

There is a lot of restriction on what can be chosen, since skills have been divided into skills and traits (only available on a double), so most coaches want some control over how their player progresses. Making it totally random would be too much.

Why didn't you include 4th ed and BB2k1? They're different from 3rd ed in that regard you know, with traits and all.

You forgot to say that in 2nd, only stars can get skills, and they get it all in one time and forever. The other players would never get skills...
So i prefer 3rd, that is a great point why i changed (and a game is more short in time=about 2/3 hours, and less rules).
The good point for 2nd Ed was the background, the 'between games' sequence and of course the figs.

Zombie, I didn't include BR2K1 as it similar (same basic system) to 3rd ed., and I never played (or had the rules for) 4th ed., so I couldn't comment (though the general impression I get is that I should thank my lucky stars for missing it!).

If you ask me, 4th ed was the best edition that Blood Bowl ever had. I know that others from the BBC would agree with me, though BB2k1 is also pretty good.

Sorry but 4th is the worst ed for BB, i think that people here agree with me.

I agree with you LS, hated 4th/Gold whatever you call it. 3ed /BB2k1 rock

4th was awful! Don't know anybody who thinks otherwise. Well at least not now...Hindsight must be 20/20.

Obviously Zombie still likes it.

I didn't like App. fees, but didn't mind OSPA. It had the interesting and unintended effect of making real high end TR games better.
Prefer 2k1, but I didn't really hate 4e...

same here, we played 4e for a whole season and I didn;t hate it, but I like the current version much better.

I've used the so called 4th ed rules in a league I ran for a season just to see what they were like, but didn't use app fees (didn't really like them).
Found 4ed to be too restrictive (anal) compared to 3ed.

there was a spurious system for rookie talent who would develop over time, but it rarely shoot out well... certainly the ability to actually develop every player on your team was one of the great draws to the game in 3e, and it still is...
