Wow, that's a cool mini! Is that a custom or from something I haven't seen before? I'm also curious what the basing material is? Looks sort of like oatmeal/grits!

it is from the Bones line by Reaper Minis. I don't see it on the site. Based with sandbox sand and sealed with mat varnish. I find it keeps it locked in place but keeps it looking like wind blown sand

Going to start looking for one to send out next year early soon. Need to see if the brick and mortar has any more stars or boosters of GW Blood Bowl models.

Side note, has anyone had tournies starting up at GW shops in their city? The local one hasn't had anything in for about a year but just started a league

all my models that I paint look like crap next to what I have received. Mental note, sit with the painters on non match weeks. To all of you doing these amazing paint jobs, what was the "ah ha!" moment that improved your painting the most?

That halfling does look amazing, I'm not at the amazing stage but I know I have improved. This would be my distilled wisdom...

First and sorry to say probably no substitute for this: Practice - I've painted about 16 teams now and with each one I improve.

Pretty basic but keeping brushes in good condition and learning that they do need to be replaced every so often was a bit of a milestone.

I think one of the hardest things to judge is getting the right amount of paint on the brush and making sure that it is at the right consistency so you get good coverage. I tend to find I err towards having too much paint on the brush and it's too thick.

A decent place to sit and at least reasonable light are good.

Just noticed that for all the above I haven’t even touched the model yet so that would suggest that preparation is pretty key.

It always amazes me how good a simple basecoat, wash, highlight and drybrush can look when care is taken.

I've never experimented with different paints so can't really comment on that.

For me the next thing I have identified to try, which means I will probably have worse look teams for a bit , is this 'wet mixing' thing the real pros do.

what was the "ah ha!" moment that improved your painting the most?

For me, it was Devlan Mud (or whatever it's called now) I use this almost exclusively as a shade after neatly painting the base coat. Then I just re-apply the base colours to the majority of the area, excluding crevices etc. then apply a small amount of highlight to the raised areas and that's pretty much it.

To all of you doing these amazing paint jobs, what was the "ah ha!" moment that improved your painting the most?

Loki sort of covered this, but I'd have to say--using the right kind of brush.

People like their fancy brushes and like to argue about them, but one thing that made a big difference to me was just getting a brush that came to a point! That may sound obvious, but there a lot of brushes out there that, while still being round instead of flat, have a tip that's cut straight instead of tapering to a point. Do not use those! Using a brush with a nice point allows you to taper your strokes more easily, and work with a larger brush in general, which will hold more paint. (Holding more paint may not make you better, but you can go a little faster.)

I think brushes are better now than when I last did any real painting, so when I got some new pointy brushes, I was amazed at how much easier it was!
