Forget Dwarves, what do Norse need for balance

So, what should Norse get to make them a team that can still be competitive after the first ten games?

Just to add some positive Norse data:
There are 36 coaches in my league. In a season, most teams play 40-50 games.
Last season a norse team finished second.
This season a norse team has performed very well, and has won 1 and finished second in another of the 3 tournaments held so far this season! However, after things have recently gone sour for him after playing against some of the heavy basher teams. Still, he managed to stay on top for something like 40 games. And his "casualty difference" in those games is +32, so he is causing a lot of hurt too.

Why not ST skills for Lineman?

Post by bampf »

I have to agree with the opinion posited by several others that Norse really hit a wall after about 6-7 games. In our leagues (always start with rookie teams and go for about 15 games) Norse have always hit that wall and no one has even dared take a Norse team in the last two seasons based on those past performances.

I m definitely in favor of Str skills for linemen. It fits the fluff. Doesn t really make a starting team better, but makes a big difference down the line. Just doesn t make sense to me why Longbeards should have access to Str skills (after starting with two of the best skills in the game) while Norse linos don t.

Sixpack595 really hit the nail on the head... after you have a kicker and DP what do you give advancing (non-double-rolling) linos? You re stuck.

I don t see Norse linemen with MB and Guard as being over-powering. It s gives em a legitimate chance of being bashy later in the season... plus in order to use those skills they need to be stuck in amongst the scrums, where opponents can exploit their AV 7 with well placed retaliatory blocks.

That s my take. Refute at will.

Also when I said that my Norse team was like 6-1 or whatever. I've had 3 Str upgrades, both catchers have had movement upgrades and one of the Str upgrades was on my Yeti/Ogre.

Will you roll my advances? :D

Getting Stat advances is huge for Norse, I think more for them than any other team. My Mv 7 Catcher is the most valuable player on my team. The Str upgrade is really big, it helps them become a legitimate bruiser team.

As for thick skull, I'd rather see the S skill access. TS would help in tourneys...not needed, and Str access wouldn't even really become a factor till the point where Norse start to suck.

IMO, the norse team is a pretty good starting team.
However, in a long season they do develop a few problems (as do most AG3+AV7 teams).

In the Copenhagen Tournament Rules (http://home.worldonline.dk/nyskes/bbowl/Ctr.htm) we do this:
Call them Marauders, increase their ReRoll cost to 70K, and allow them to get physical abilities on doubles rolls.
It makes them slightly weaker on the short term, and slightly stronger in the long term. :D
Just what the doctor ordered.

I know you can argue that Norse have won the last 2 European tournaments (I think) and so they are a great tournament team but they are not. They are a good tournament team, but with the reset's and skill progression in a tournament (in particular a six gamer or more) you also need a lot of luck. Without it you will lose at least one game down to your opponent's ability to knock you down and get through your armour every block. I think they are a well balanced tournament team, and the worry of tampering with them too much is it would make them a bit too good for tournaments. Still, even with the good results of the last two tournaments, they rank very poorly in tournaments compared to other teams.

There are three practical solutions I think can be made for the team which keeps the team balanced but would have just enough effect to help them challenge more effectively.

(1) TRR at 50K. This would slightly increase their tournament ability, but would help them out a great deal in league progression.

(2) Make catchers MA 7. Not much of a change, but enough to make the team a more potent scoring threat, and would aid defensive play no end.

(3) Give Berserkers Thick Skull. It means a starting player has four skills, but so do Troll Slayers! At the moment Berserkers are overcosted at 90K )a Human Blitzer is far more effective) and this would give them slightly better play effect on the pitch.

I would only want to see one the three changes made though!

Richard
