Deceived & Brainwashed - at ebay everything is RARE

Post by narkotic »

Nothing new for you:
BB stuff (like evry other hobby/gaming stuff) is being sold at ebay with the most common piece labeled as rare, limited ed., never seen before and directly out of oblivion. First I thought morons, then I ignored them, but now I feel stupid bc when I sell something on ebay I rarely use the label rare, except where appropriate (When neoliminal sold his lizardmen cheerleader he did write a notice that this item is realy rare).
Waht do you think, all those sellers, do they know that they talking bullshit or is it just an advertisement measure. Does such an outragous announcement raises the bids at ebay.

look here for an example: "special edition and very rare"

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... egory=7389

too bad, you can still order these from GW, but nicely painted though...

I know its a stupid topic but I just wanted to tell what I thought when I saw a rare auction once more.

P.S: as annoying as "rare-sellers" are those who label minis from the WFB or 40K range as Blood Bowl whatever...

I think its more that people don't really know its rare, more the fact its an old model so use mark it as rare because of that. This will catch out some people but if you put research into buying anything you gain the upper hand. I always look into anything I buy that is either expensive or not something commanly available currently. Then I always usualy am careful with my money ;]

Its usually down to just lack of knowledge on the sellers part, or trying to get a wider range of views on their items.

Gave me an idea:

It appears that everyone makes their own text for the auctions, right?

What if those who know the most about BB miniatures (who, incidently, can be found at TBB) started promoting a system of "BB miniature statements":

Anyone wishing to sell BB items through ebay can contact them and get a statement (about the rarity etc.) of the miniatures to their auction. I'm not an ebayer myself, but it would seem to me that if such a system would be promoted:
1) those who do have rare figs to sell can get a statement to the auction description which says that a body of experts independent from the seller confirms that this indeed is a rare miniature.
2) Auctions where someone is trying to sell "rare" figs without a statement would seem questionable, thus encouraging people to ask for the statement.

The body giving out statements could be formed out of the most fig-happy TBB members including at least you-know-who, you-know-who-two and you-know-who-three

What's in it for them? Fame and glory in the BB community? More hits for their websites? I dunno, but I thought I'd share the idea.

good idea - it might attract more people to this board too

I'll be up for it, but my bb mini knowledge is hardly encyclopedic :)

Yes it has, but it's too confusing for the casual non-fanatic WFB/BB player.
I guess blood-bowl.net miniature gallery is a far better point to start with, as even some BB ebay auction turned up including reference links to the gallery.
It covers BB minis perfectly, providing pictures and info about the real rare BB minis. The only improvement I could think of is adding a rough estimation of its market value. There is a website out there displaying all ICE LotR/MERP modules with an average selling value they achieved on ebay, which is very handy to see what the are worth,
So before we start an evaluation/system which won't work bc it will only reach a minority (because it means more work for a seller), we should promote blood-bowl.net as an unbiased opinion/evaluation provider.

Then it will hit 100.000 visiotors even faster :P
