How much does it cost to play chess? About 5$ for a board and pieces. Stratego? Not much more. Axis and Allies, Diplomacy, etc? One of the players needs to buy the box (usually cheaper than just one full Blood Bowl team, unpainted even!), and the others don't need to pay anything! Blood bowl is a strategy game. I don't see why it should be different from other strategy games.
And before you start mentioning Warhammer and 40k, the cost of playing is so high (and the investment in time as well) that nobody plays those around here, even though we have the boxes and rules. There are always a good 10 to 15 people playing in the Blood Bowl league at any one time here. The group changes every 4 months because of University semesters and the fact that most people who study here have work terms every other semester and have to move to another city for those. Yet despite that handicap, we still maintain about 10 to 15 players every semester. How about Warhammer and 40k? I've seen maybe 2 games played in the last 9 years!
The problem is that some people view Blood Bowl as if it were Warhammer or something, when in fact it's just a strategy game. We've realized this over here and treat it as such.
At least now that i've bought all the teams (well, except norse, but i'll get them too eventually), people can borrow them from me. Before that, whatever the two races playing, all you could see was plastic orcs and humans. The game was just as much fun though. Even now that everyone has the option to borrow the teams from me, some people still prefer to play with plastic humans and orcs to represent other races, because that way they don't have to carry their team with them, because you never know when you're going to play. I don't see anything wrong with that.
The point of this game is not the minis, the point is the game itself! The minis don't matter.
Who here cheats?

Thats untrue. The game was designed with minis in mind. The game is a whole, just cause some people are lazy or cheap doesn't mean the parts they don't like don't matter. I understand your group doesn't own minis, thats not really very common. The game COMES with minis. What do you guys do use 1 board, or make them yourselves? A big part of BB is the minis, that will never change.
As for your comments about WFB or 40K, they are much bigger sellers for GW than BB. They are more popular almost everywhere. I wish we had more BB players around here than 40K or WFB players. Our 40K league has about 60 players most years. WFB is a bit smaller. Buying minis isn't a problem for most people, why do BBers have trouble?Zombie wrote:The point of this game is not the minis, the point is the game itself! The minis don't matter.

We play in a gaming club that owns two boxes, so that's plenty of plastic figs right there. Add to that the figs from Warhammer Quest and a couple other games at the club, and we have no need to buy anymore.
Finally, add to that the 3 boxes that i own, along with about 30 teams (ok so i'm a bit obsessive, but who here isn't?), and why would anyone need anymore?
By the way, it's not really the price that's prohibitive for us, it's the time it takes to paint them up and the trouble of bringing them along. University students don't have that much time on their hands you know. It's hard enough for many of the coaches to squeeze in enough time for the game they play every week or two, let alone buy figs and paint them.
