Skill Bands

we all know the current rules are the most balanced set yet for longer leagues (Darkson do not mention LRB 4 please)

I do have one issue though (ok I probably have mor ethan one but one that I always come back to)

Skill Bands

In 3rd Edition you could build towards 7 skills and creating your own star player.

This led to Super players who were able to single handedly win you a game, even in leagues where star players were banned.

This led to the Appearance fee rules to prohibit or at least hinder their creation because the handicap system was terrible.

but sometime in the evolution of the rules we are only able to get 6 skills now

I would not hesitate to go back to a system where we copuld gain 7 skills now, especially as things are levelled off on costs.

Currently
6
16 (difference 10)
31 (difference 15)
51 (difference 20)
76 (difference 25)
176 (difference 100, which you must admit is a bit of a jump)

suggested
6
16 (difference 10)
31 (difference 15)
51 (difference 20)
76 (difference 25)
126 (difference 50)
201 (difference 75)

you would be slightly more likely to see a star with 6 skills and on rare occasions a 7 star player would arise. Whereupon every team in the league would place Bounties on his head and try to take it off his shoulders.

The way things are currently it is not difficult to get to 5 (even with Chaos or Dwarves who skill slowly), but at that point team progression stalls.

Is there not a place in the LRB world for a little 7th Circle of Hell love.

Next league I run / participate in I would like to see these bands installed.

I agree in theory. The more skills the better. Don't know why this was changed.

I think it was a reaction to massed team slayings during 3ed that almost gave us OSPA and Gold ed.

I remember some of the early discussions on TBB being around this and that we shouldn't be able to make stars ourselves. Didn't like it then

I went looking for it, and found some interesting discussions around Star Player rolls and limiting / peaking to prevent super players (these were between Galak, Dook, Valen And Toby)

oh the good ole days.

Different strokes.
I'd like to limit skill rolls and team rerolls to 4.
High TV BB is not as fun as 120-170TV BB. IMO - naturally :D

Horrible to balance but an overall skill limit of so many per team might be interesting. That way a coach would have to choose to concentrate on a few very good players or spread out over more players.

Hey, don't get me wrong, I totally agree that LRB5/6 is the most balanced ruleset for longer leagues.
I just disagree with the fact it needs to be balanced.

And I also agree with your idea on skills - I have no idea why it was limited to 7, and would be happy to houserule your idea in.

I've always thought it should go by 5s, then 25s, then by 100s, then by 100s in a fib sequence: 6, 16, 31, 51, 76, 126, 201, 301, 501, 801, 1301, 2101... forever.

I remember reading your letter in BBMag2 about how you liked the gold rules............

Cheap shot :D

I certainly remember JJ prefacing it with a lot of "oooh look, it's all good because one coach likes it".
Not my finest hour I admit
But it was a bit of diplomacy really. I figured if the gold edition (terrible as they were) were set in stone, I might as well try to get some major kinks ironed out.

(Or, to put it in another way: If I was having a turd for dinner, I was asking for a cold beer to go with it )

But I still think BB plays a heck of a lot better at 150TV than at 250TV
Cheers

we have that, it is called inducements and spiraling expenses.

it is unlikely you would ever get to more than 1 player at Legend Level (201+)

if you managed 2 and suffered some casualties, you would have to retire them to get any cash to rebuild.

we are in sync there, but as we are stuck with it, I like this as a house rule. tbh given the current rules I would give SPP's for crowd pushes as well to encourage taking of skills like Frenzy and Juggernaut. (not fouls though).
