Use spray varnish. Some of my models have over 20 years of use and the paint isn't scratched.
Back in the day I used GW Purity Seal. At some point they must have changed it, the new purity seal is very matt and I like it a bit shinier. Now I use Army Painter Velvet.

For my dwarf team's deathroller (for which I use Scibor "heavy steam armor"), I made a special base with a rotating dial built into the base itself. I was inspired by the old EPIC 40k shield counters that titans had but is actually made from a casualty counter from wargame bases in scotland.... it looks like this
