What a fantastic weekend...

Warhammer World and Bugman's were great, food was better than I expected and it was really nice meeting some of you IRL.

The GW staff was top-notch, I give them a 10 out of 10. Even if they did not know the rules 100%, they were incredibly friendly and responsive.

All my opponents were extremelly nice and most of my games were a blast. I am specially proud of being the only one able to stop Pippy (congrats for winning Best of the Rest), that was a hard-fought tie! and finishing in a very respectable 12th place.

I also managed to win Most Touchdowns Scored and shake hands with the very Jervis Johnson.

Now with the not-so-good marks. In the last round I had to play Planlos for the second time and we were not allowed to switch opponents. At least I got my revenge (he won 1-3 and then I won 3-0).

Not getting a coin (or any other gift) was an utter disappointment. I expected GW to use the NAF World Cup experience to improve the tourney, but apparently nothing was done. The sad thing is this tournament would be soooo great with only a tiny effort on their side...

So... thank you all for making BB what it is (despite GW), congrats to winners and losers alike and specially to the Italians for that nice dinner on Sunday night, even though when going back to the rented car, we found the passenger window had been broken.

Well done to Jock, great result, made even better considering that it was his 1st TT tournament.

No coin was a big disappointment for me too. Makes it hard to accept that the price increase was in any way justified to put it mildly.

As for installing aircon in the hall? Sounds nice but i'm pretty sure that doing that for such a large space would be ridiculously expensive not to mention wasteful on the power. All that's really needed is vents and/or openable windows in the roof and to make sure that the outside of the roof is a light colour (preferably white) rather than a dark colour.

My first BBGT was a mixed event. Great time was had talking to a wide range of competetors. And the 2 nights of drinking gave plenty of time for some in depth discussions.

Games, went ok on the whole. Worst dice raping ever upset me a little and got a bit stressed out during saturday afternoon. But played Geoff P last game which really made up for it. Taare was a very good player too and deserved his win. 4w and 2l is my minimum goal at all events, so counts as another success. Aside from playing Geoff were I learnt more in 2 hours than ever before, I didn't feel I learnt much else.

GW staff were excellent. Aside from one ref who got all 3 rulings I heard him make wrong... But he was pleasent about when corrected by Simon. Bar staff were great and no admin issues that I've seen in WFB GT's


Neagtives, heat, although not much can be done about that.

General GW crap support, appalling really. £55 quid for essentially hall hire. We paid for the bar staff with money spent on beer. Ticket printing and rulespack printing/posting isn't needed. The refs (except 1 head ref) were next to useless as the worlds best players were under the roof. Admin, ok 1 needed, but could probably get a volunteer or someone paid in minis for next to nothing. Insurance was mentioned but 11000? What about a simple disclaimer? (Not into law, so no real idea about this). The hall lighting etc would have been on anyway. We normally bring our own boards. I can't see any real costs. No coin/medal/limited ed mini really is a smack in the face after seeing what practically every other tournament does. A new GW mini would have made GW almost heroes ala the resi gutter. What a buzz could have been created. An ulfwerener would have created a storm. And sold next year out months in advance.



I would love to see an income/expenditure sheet for the event.


Next year I'm going to the dungeonbowl as my major. Not ruling out the BBGT because the players make it. If enough players want to play elsewhere, I will certainly join them, and just socialise with the GT lot on the evenings like tritex did this year.

Video game was a much of a nothingness. Never got within 10 yards of a monitor of the single demo they had. And I'm going to by it anyway. At least cyanide gave me a sticker!

Black library was a joke too. Let's have a special event were you spend more money.


Without trying to sound too rude I'd also like to hear an official NAF point of view on the 'extras' that were talked about/planned. I'll always support the NAF and think they're a great organisation.

What was the "top secret event that he couldn't talk about yet" thing the head ref talked about at the start?

All i saw on the sat night was a rather empty bugmans and a mediocre pub quiz.

The "Top Secret Surprise" was that we all got royally stitched by GW.

Only problem was that it wasn't that much of a surprise. We kinda expected it, just hoped for a miracle.

I keep hoping that Jervis or one of the winners will bring along an electric hand buzzer for the awards ceremony.

No probs there John, it seemed to be a polite enquiry so courtesy extended.

We got smacked in the face by GW legal for most of it and IMO, it was a bit naughty of them to leave it that late to tell me as well.
I would echo what has been said elsewhere on the forum, the staff were great, indeed the staff you all saw at the weekend, some of them saw the ideas.... loved them too but they are staff, not legal. Dave not best pleased, rather leave it at that.

I have to confess the whole thing of "getting this close" to GW and the costs, the implications (GW legal), the insurance, the costs, the whole "big picture" has been an eye openner. The lack of a coin seems so trivial but understanding how it didnt fit into this budget or that budget is very frustrating. Wasnt happy. I was also very annoyed - and made that known - about certain other things (like Bugmans Friday when I have sent dozens of email etc over the last 4 months).

But all in all....... Well I guess I am in the minority and say this as a personal comment not on any NAF basis.... but I got a great buzz out of looking around and seeing 178 coaches in one hall.... the beers, the whole show. £55... pricey compared too....well that's an open answer. To what? I paid that for a football ticket and saw 90mins of rubbish. You cannot compare the GT to a normal tournament, it seems that is the first mistake any TBB poster can make. Please, dont do that. It is not the same ball park and your arguements or validations are lost.

First, Dave thanks for coming out and saying something. It shows that the NAF is an organisation that demands respect through being an open and positive influence on the game.

I wish GW would treat us all with the same respect.

I do see your point on the 178 coaches, but I've seen the same at the wps club challenge and was gutted to miss the 270 at the world cup. And the price issue isn't that bad really. The football arguement showed that.

Few questions, not directed at Dave or the NAF but just wondering about them

1) Does GW make a profit from the tournaments like the bloodbowl/wfb/40k GTs? I'd guess so...

2) What other tournaments compare in size? I remember a friend playing a 230 man WFB tournament in Germany, was wondering if there are any comparable ones for BB. Is the dungeonbowl that big?

3) Out of the people I drank with on the Friday and Saturday, what tournament(s) are absolute musts when looking to plan which events you'll attend? Obviously geography comes into it somewhat. For me it's water, monkey, I'm aiming for pearlies and poo next year.

I'm not mad with GW, just don't have the buzz I've had after every other BB tournament I've attended. Even none NAF ones.

Waterbowl, monkeybowl and albabowl made me feel like I was part of something special, somewhat like a team, or a friend.

Bloodbowl made me feel like a customer.

Before the glory that was the World Cup, the Blood Bowl is the biggest. In pretty much any other year (including this year) it will still be the biggest.

Dutch Open! Loads of really cool events around (especially Brassman in Belgium which I hope to get back to this year) but the Dutch open is consistently one of the best events of the year, any year...

To answer the one DC can't, from what I heard, the BB GT - yes. The Doubles tourneys - yes, but not as much; the 40K/WFB GT finals - no,because the players there win their tickets in the heats (if I understood that right).
Overall, the Events team breaks even or a small profit on tickets sales over the course of the year, it's things like the bar sales (FRIDAY NIGHT! ) that decide if they make money.
