Yes, there is a load of spam at the moment (and I don't mean my posts).
Will deal with it tomorrow and will look at tightening the security again.

Well, I'd say: Don't worry!
Spam is, unfortunately, unavoidable.
As long as everyone reports that crap and it'll be cleaned out rather soon, everything is just fine.

It's not your fault, is it?

By the way. there is kind of a problem in the Offtopic section... :o

Looking at them, look like they're from the same host. It could be a weird IP where you can ban them all that way.

When you see a spam post, please don't reply to it. Once we ascertain that a "user" is a spammer we can ban them and delete their posts all in one go, we don't need to delete their posts individually, but if you reply your posts will be left hanging around.

Maybe, if this keeps going on, you need to get a new rank installed: SHERIFF
Users who actually can delete spam posts but nothing else?
Some trustworthy long-time guys maybe?

Well that would basically be a full admin. The person would have to be able to ban the fake user too. Also have access to IPs to see patterns. So it's whether the site bods feel they need more staff or not.

I'm pretty sure that the distribution of rights is a little more complex than just Admin, Mod and User.

I'm running a little forum myself but one from a free forum provider, so I don't have access to all the administration stuff.
And I didn't need it yet, as we're just 7 people, friends from my youth who try to stay in touch and, thank god or any other spiritual entity, we didn't have any spam attacks yet.

But it was just an idea, sure, it's for those who run TFF to decide.

And, sure as hell or any other bad place, I didn't want to be part of it!

I've seen a lot of SPAM today, making me hungry. Best just to report it and let MODs delete them. Ban their IP and change the site security. But then I would get hungry :(

Of course, getting away from PHPBBx would be better, but that's a job for Ian Doubleskulls and isnt likely to happen.

There are some antispam measures(/addons) in(/for) some versions of PHPBB. One is that new posters need moderation and another that posts are analyzed and compared against know spam. PM me for more info. Moving away to other software is just a change and after some experiences, for worse in some cases... search being limited for load reasons here? others will crumble with less and admins will go nuts trying to figure why things fail for common valid users.

Okay ... put up a new wall. Be curious if it works.

New wall? :-? New forum? More hurdles?

Nope ... new hurdles that do not effect you. And so far the new wall seems to work. I think the details of how to get through the old wall get found out and then traded among spammer. So tear down the old wall ... build a new wall ... and it looks like it worked as no new spammers since I did it.

Not quite true - I've deleted 3 or 4 spammers.
