Time to beef up security?

Seems to have been a bit of a bot incursion the last few days. Anything the general readers here can do to help?

It's not just here. My forum was getting flooded to point where I have shut down user registrations and removed to ability to post as a guest.

In the short term, if you need any more moderators just to target the spambot accounts and ban them, I'm happy to volunteer. I'm sitting at my PC most of the day (Network Engineer...)

I see we are now getting different languages, so I can't even find there odd grammar and juxtaposition of things they are trying to sell amusing

I'm hoping that I've finally managed to clear them all out of the system (only 100+). Not sure what the issue is, as the security settings haven't changed, but if there's another influx of spam then we'll have to change to admin authorising new accounts.

On my forum there were some 30+ new spam account created daily during the weekend. As you have also experienced, the security settings were not changed for my forum either, so I actually did change it so that I have to authorize new accounts. I also added a lot of domains to the ban-list for e-mails, which seems to have slowed down the pace of the spammers; so far I've "only" had 7 today, all from gmail accounts.

We had this about a year ago. I'd get 20-30 spam accounts a day popping up, and no captcha plugin I tried helped. In the end I went to blood bowl themed security questions for account registrations and every user's first post requiring mod approval. Its done the trick nicely - we've not had a spam registration since.

when we see spam pop up like we had, would you like us to flag every item, or one in every thread, or one post by the user?
