NAF PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS 2020

Post by Tojurub »

Dear NAF Members,

It is time to start the election for our next President

The time-table will be as follows:

- 4 Jan 2020 nominations start
- 12 Jan 2020 nominations end and Q&A start
- 19 Jan 2020 Dec voting start
- 26 Jan 2020 election ends and the new President is elected

On the NAF membership section of the NAF forum, there will be separate threads for both Nominations, Q&A and the final election. Aside of this there will be a thread where all discussion on the nominees, the questions and the answers can take place.

For the record, the role of the NAF President from the latest NAF Charter:

President (Elected Position)

Directs NAF strategy and planning
Chairs meetings
Serves as liaison between members and officers
Serves as liaison between outside organization and NAF
Fulfills duties of other officers if absent from meetings or events
Reviews regular reports from other officers and offers direction
Sets meeting agenda items

Note: The presidential elections were moved one month back in order to give the candidates a relaxing and well deserved Christmas vacation and they can fully concentrate on answering questions during the Q&A session.

Hi Tojurub, do you know if the server for member.thenaf.net will be fixed in time for the election Q&A? The last couple of days it's taking 3-4 minutes to load a page which is making it hard to use.

37 blank votes

so total of 656 votes casted. What do you mean with % of participating members?

This?
Nate: 48.1% (51.1% without blank votes)
Shaun: 29.3% (31.0%)
Ben: 16.9% (17.9%)

blanks 5.6%
[if it does not add up exactly to 100.0% this is because of rounding effects]

Or do you mean percentage of overall active membership?

Even if that's not what viyullas meant, that would still be interesting to know.

Draw your own conclusions...

It depends on how one would define active membership. If one use the what is the simplest approach, members that have not yet expired, the voter turn out is 11.3%.

Another number one could conjure up is turn out of members that have logged in to the website recently, or played in a tournament within a reasonable time frame. It seems that there might be a language barrier for the election. It looks like English speaking countries and English 2nd language countries have better turn out.

I have been having thoughts on the election and thanks to Kyree data on country of voting posted on NAF forum it has been consistent with my working theory.

Interestingly we can see 3 archetypes in the candidate running and I am going to do some stereotyping but I will be nice and try my best to not say anything out of place, but if I screw up I apologize in advance AND will apologize specifically afterwards and issue a correction. (I don't think I will but I am only human)

Okay onto stereotyping....

We have the 1) Incumbent and establishment figure 2) The regional politician and 3)The populist.

Glaxio, has been in the NAF for along time held various positions and "worked his way up" to the top job. During this time he has time to network with people from all over the BB community, for the longtime members this represents not changing what has worked in the past.

Monkeyjuice represents someone who has local support in their region, learnt the ropes, but not at a larger scale, being outside the NAF structure, this represents modification not revolution.

BPGreenman is the populist taking his message directly to the people via media, and representing a group of people who have more recently taken up the hobby or would like to see more diversity in how BB is played.

All valid points I feel and each approach has it merits, personally I would like a mix of all three......

I think Glaxio's difference factor is all the votes pilled up from NTOs, RTOs and people associated with them across the globe from long time contacts. While the other two could only easily reach out to the English speaking world, also having most of the current officers being elected from the UK is a factor in spreading the leadership.

What interested me was the rather low participation from Spain despite having the second highest membership (ahead of US). I did see where there was engagement with NAF leadership on a Spanish forum, but there is significant hostility towards the entity from this quarter. I hope that this bridge can be rebuilt in the coming years. One key point in the debate seems to be when Nate asked the other two who/how their picks for the appointed positions they would need to fill.

Anyway, here ends my amateur political analysis for what its worth, fell free to point out my mistakes or insults.

You also need to remember there's a lot (I'd assume a majority) of NAF members (current or past) that really don't give a monkeys for the inner workings of the NAF, only being members for the gift, the rankings and/or just being signed up at XXX tournament.
I know back in the day when we had 8 NAF members here I was the only one that accessed the NAF website for more than looking at the rankings.
