NCBB: Slam Diego State Smacktecs

League: NCAA-themed FUMBBL for American coaches. 'Course, since it's BB themed on the NCAA, we're the NCBB. It's a long-established league and I'm one of a big crop of twelve new (to NCBB) coaches for Season XVI. We play 9-game seasons with a bowl at the end, players automatically retire after 4 seasons (some get drafted by the NBFL), and my first season is in a league with the other newbies. I think they're gonna do a round-robin with two forfeit rounds, to get the season to 9 games. Opposition is very lightweight: about half elves, with a lot of Skaven, and in terms of bash only me, Dwarfs, Khemri, Necro, and a lighter Human team.

Being an alum of San Diego State University, I chose to play the Slam Diego State Smacktecs, and give my players names out of Aztec myth and history. Being an orc, I naturally chose to play Humans. :orc:

Our theme is simple. Americans speak English, badly. Mexicans speak Spanish, badly. Aztecs spoke Nahuatl, probably also badly. We are the SDSU Smacktecs. We talk Smack, fluent-like. Wanna learn Smack? Come a little closer....

We started with three non-competitive builder games. It's a bummer that they were non-competitive, because they were laughers. All told I allowed my opponents 21 Spp, zero skill rolls, and a net loss of 120k gold, and got myself 63 SPP, 6 skill rolls (with 2x +AG), 4 players at 10+SPP, and a gain of 150k gold.

#1: Happygrue's very stabby Dark Elves. Fun concept, and he played great, but I got really lucky on three really important rolls (critical skull/both RR into skull/skull, a Blitz kickoff, and a snaked pickup), and as a result it was never close. He also lost a Blitzer and a Lino, with no skill-ups.
#2: baelnic's Slann. Not a fair fight, and not all that close as 2-1 games go, but still the best game I got if the proof is in the pudding, and he was the only one who unarguably didn't leave any worse than he came in, though not much better either (did get a Blitzer TD, so something...).
#3: drrek's Dwarfs. I got both his Runners, and it was all downhill from there, but some greedy (and unlucky) ball games held the score to 2-0, could have been 3-0. His dead 5SPP Runner took this MVP too, and he got no SPP for the whole match.

So much for builders, you say? Nah, here's where the Smacktecs are.
Ogre: Guard (6)
Blitzers: Mighty Blow (13), Dodge (7), rookie (1), rookie (0)
Thrower: Block (10)
Catcher: +AG (11)
Linemen: +AG (10), rookie (5), 4x rookie (0)
Apo, 3RR, FF3, 60k Treasury, 1.29M.

You think that's cool, you should see the Army team: Dark Elves with two +ST linos. 'Course, that just means more meat for the Ogre: Tlaloc must be fed! There are still several teams still building, too.

Schedule comes out Thursday. Smack, literal and figurative, comes out in a continuous stream of (un)consciousness.

Round 1 vs a nearly identical team run by game|set|match is in the books, a 2-2 tie.

Tonight, Skaven. Rookie skaven and I'm at 1.3M. Good thing there is no Wizard allowed. :)

He didn't chef it, thank Nuffle.

He took Fezglitch, then wasted 200k on bribes that got him a second drive with Fezglitch, just long enough to see him flail and fail on defense. (Fezglitch is great for one shot, but he's strictly an offensive player in my book.) Won 2-0.

In 2 games against lower-AV opponents with less Mighty Blow, I've thrown 118 blocks to 59 received, and I'm 3-5 on Cas. That means I've only got one Cas per 40 blocks thrown (low, not abominable) and I've taken one per 10 against, which is considerably better than the odds I'd expect to take on automatic pows. That's annoying, especially given all the 3d T/MB hits I've thrown. Here's hoping the Law of Averages kicks in and my damage rate starts regressing toward the mean.

Tlaloc must be fed!

Lost 2-1 to Dwarfs, who -MA'ed my +AG/Guard Catcher. Won 2-0 against Slann. I killed his Blodge Catcher, he Apo'ed to Badly Hurt, and as soon as he took the pitch again, was killed by a rock.

Next up, Beerox's Khemri. Beerox is a very disciplined coach: I will have to be on my game. I got four skill-ups in the last game, so will be packing a Guard Ogre, 3x MB Blitzers (one with Tackle), a Dodge/Guard Blitzer, a Block/Kick Thrower, a +AG/Guard/-MA Catcher, a rookie Thrower, a rookie Catcher, a Block lino with 11 SPP, and two rookie linos.

Right now, with 12 men, I'm sitting at 1470k. Beerox has a game to go, and will probably be around 1300-1350k. I figure two linos may let him have a chainsaw and a bribe, so one more lino, 13 men total, puts me at 1520.
