VuK and Son

Post by voyagers_uk »

so..... My Boy is 6 and a bit of a prodigy, he has had an overwhelming knowledge of Dinosaurs since he was 4 and quite regularly scares the pants of staff at the Natural History Museum by knowing more than they do....

that said he is now fond of Fantasy and adventure and has been asking me to teach him BB for ages.

I finally caved and after several months of talking the basics with him and having him both watch me on Cyanide and play the tutorial himself, we painted some teams together. by which I mean that he would choose the colour scheme and paint the bulk of the model and I would tidy it up and paint the details for him...

he now has a Skaven team and an Orc team and we got the board out and played a simplified game at the weekend. I figured that we could throw together his roster and play against a Norse team I had that had played 2 matches and had 2 skills on it. that way he could get some inducements and I could explain that to him.

he was able to take Varag, as I had been lucky with dice rolls on cash in the previous two games and with the skills and his not having every player to max out his own roster. it was a good chance to explain Loner / Mighty Blow, Jump Up etc whilst he was pounding me (his Phrase :o , he called his Orc team The Pounders and named them after Marvel Super Heroes, and he said it's clobbering time every so often....)

I kept it very open and ignored some parts of the rules which are hard to explain to him, such as how weather would change during the match from a heat wave to a blizzard etc. he can be a little ocd so I chose to avoid that conversation and lose several hours.

he requested that we take a break every four turns (each) and I think that worked out very well as it allowed us to return to the table and give the situation a fresh look.

he scored the first TD in Turn 5 of the first half when the crowd threw the ball 11 squares into my half to the feet of the lineman, who I had suggested might be able to get the score if something crazy happened....

I scored in Turn 8 but he made it very hard for me, jumping Varag up to block/blitz on a regular basis and KO'ing and BH'ing a few of my AV7 jugheads...

I took it to 2-1 in the second turn of the 2nd half and he proceeded to grind me down to paste, KO'ing a further 2. But he just couldn't get the score, it was frustrating as he had a player in scoring position but the pick up the throw all came up as 1's and I was pushing the "he has sure hands (or pass), you can roll that again...." line a lot, his luck just deserted him. My Snow Troll even killed a lineman, and after I explained the Apothecary to him, he gleefully rolled it to a BH and moved past what I felt was going to be the first hiccup.

but at the end he won 40k and may buy a gobbo, he got a skill on a Black Orc and took Block to give himself a pivot and he is anxiously awaiting the weekend to play his first match with his skaven against my starting Halfling team. that should be a massacre! especially after I explained "Take Root".... he actually rubbed his hands together.

I sense evil genius at work.... :smoking:

best few hours of my life. :D

I cannot wait either.

That's awesome. I envy you. I tried to teach my 5 year old daughter Space Hulk a few weeks ago. She thought it was fun setting up the board and by the middle of turn 1 she was thoroughly uninterrested.

Of course...looking back on the situation I'm not sure why I ever thought it would work out to begin with. :D

Anyway, well done on bringing up another future BB-er

Lucky you.

My 16yo boy looked at 40K for a while, then decided not to bother (a good thing), but doesn't want to game at all (boo!).
My 13yo daughter - well, hanging around with nerds isn't on her list.

My mates sons (13 and 11) are both just getting into 40K, and have dabbled with BB.

I'm meant to be overseeing another 13yo who's just started at the club play a game tomorrow - he seems more keen on BB then he is on 40K.

I might make ARBBL a BB group after all.

2 more games in the books, using different teams to achieve some easy wins

appreciation for different play styles
enthusiasm for skill progression
differing inducements
overdog versus underdog etc

His Skaven butchered my Halflings 3-1 (my TD was a TTM score in turn 7 of the second half - it wasn't close)

My rookie D Elves routed his Undead 3-1 but he creamed me 4-2 in casualties and 5-1 in KO's even going so far as to raise the dead and take a line-elf for his zombie ranks

he is enjoying it more and needs less breaks now. gradual build up is best

I have found that I need to point out some things during the game (less than I expected but different)

eg. he spotted that I had a receiver downfield and was within scoring range for the next turn, so he decided he wanted to blitz that guy out of the game. he was just going to charge a guy over a 1 dice block him. I pointed out that if he moved another guy over first he would have an assist and be able to get a 2nd dice, making the blitz more likely....

positional awareness will come with time I think.

he skilled up a Mummy and rolled a normal only Strength Skill. I went through the options and pointed out what was the more popular skill pick, but after hearing the skill descriptions he went with Stand Firm. He really liked the idea of an immovable wall of bandages.

His Skaven also skilled up 2 Gutter Runners and he went Block on both.

fun in the future awaits.

probably his Orcs versus my Halflings

my overall plan is to have a close 6 -7 team league season with maybe 8-10 games per team with him getting a team to the final and winning the Cup. I will buy a small cup for him to have on his shelf...

I know this is sort of like providing cheap drugs to get your market hooked... but heck I am hardly impartial.

now you're talking......

we are part way through the next game , which we will finish on Thursday, my High Elves versus his Orcs (again manipulated to handicap myself by giving him Varag and Scrappa)

he is now reading the 2ed Compendium at bedtimes....fluff aplenty

ok, so another game in the books for his orcs and a draw versus my High Elves, it finished 2-2 (1-1 in cas) and allowed me to cover off what happens in the case of a draw. I ignored the coin flip and overtime for now.

with injuries it is also easier to play them as follows

11-38 - badly hurt
41-58 - miss next game
61+ dead

rather than get into team management and cutting niggles/stat breaks for now.

he confidently knows where the 2 dice blocks are now and what he needs for dodges, etc

so the slow process begins. just talked the wife into letting me buy him a new team for his birthday... thinking the halloweenies... he wants werewolves.

Sounds like great fun! Hoping my boy(s) will fall for the game as well... But I guess a bit of patience is needed as the oldest is 1½ and the youngest should come out in a month or so.
