I really to attend my first ever tourny, and I say that every year.
Could I actually get a team painted by May next year?
Which team shall I take?
Can I actually play a game prior to attending other than on Fummbl or BBLE?
Aaaarrrghhhh how can I motivate to pull my finger out of my arse and attend the daddy of all tournies
Answers on a postcard.

Re: NAF Championship LII - 4th & 5th May 2013 - Nottingham U
I’ve got mixed feelings about this.
On the one hand when I went last year it was a lot better run than when GW had control and so it’s good if this gives the NAF even more freedom. The removal of the GW models restriction is good as well and will mean more interesting teams on display and not put those off who don’t have GW teams they like.
I do note that it is more expensive than last year, but then I’ve not seen the new venue so is hard to compare. The food has been a bit mixed at warhammer world and lack of air con was horrendous in some years.
My main concern is that moving from the GW venue will remove the perceived “officialness” of the tournament that could discourage newbies from attending. This might be balanced out by those who dislike GW and don’t want to give them any money coming. But I think one of the best things about the GT was it being a great introduction to the BB tourney scene so I hope every effort is made to continue that tradition.

To be fair the price has gone up to what gw was charging before the NAF took over and gw didnt have to rent a venue...

That’s true, but there was always a lot of moaning about how much more expensive the GT was than other tournaments. Warhammer World and Bugman’s does have a good atmosphere and you can always check out the museum, store or the 40K and Fantasy battles taking place on the other tables.robsoma wrote:To be fair the price has gone up to what gw was charging before the NAF took over and gw didnt have to rent a venue...
So unless this new venue has some other significant benefits (such as cheaper drinks, better food or facilities) then it looks like GW were charging the going rate for such a large event with 2 lunches included. The extra £10 may be used for loads of giveaways, but I’d rather they keep these to quality ones like the coin last year or just make it cheaper. Some of the “free” stuff I’ve seen for tournaments has been really nice but other bits have been hideous
I just think the GW bashing should stay to the areas where they deserve it, of which there are quite a few (finecast, inflation busting price rises, their treatment of specialist games, being massive jerks to Galak, etc).

If you are travelling to Nottingham you can still visit the museum and Bugmans. There is no reason people can't meet up there on the Friday for example.
As for the price ; GW gave us the hall for a nominal amount with the clause we paid inflated meal costs. Now we have left we have to pay to hire the hall. The last GW run GT was £55 IIRC? So whilst we understand that this is expensive for a tournament, it isn't just any event and it isn't that much more expensive. I've been to events that charged £30 without providing food or free gifts (or even prizes!). I can also assure you the venue is fabulous.
As for free gifts ; we can't please everyone. We got 180 coaches last time, and I fully expect some of them hated the coin Leader token. But I have seen loads in use (something you can't say for many free gifts) so I think the majority of the community feel we got that one right. Hopefully the community trust us to get this right again, but if we don't there will be plenty of time for criticism after the event.

The coin from 2011 and the leader token are great. I'm really looking forward to seeing what you come up with this timeJoemanji wrote:As for free gifts ; we can't please everyone. Yeah, I'm a little sad about the fact it has come to this in the end, after all going to GW HQ has been an annual tradition for me and Shaniepoo since 2003. But if that's the way it be, I'm glad Joe & Co. are doing everything they can to keep the NAF Championship/GT on the map and make it as big and badazz as possible. Looking forward to it and looking forward to seeing the new venue/

I'm really not fussed by the location. The atmosphere is made by those attending and the chance not not be surrounded by half a hall of kids is great. It's the £50 price point thats putting me off at the moment.

Re: NAF Championship LII - 4th & 5th May 2013 - Nottingham U
Remember, that's only £10 up on last year. And it's cheaper than it used to be run by GW (£55) for no prizes, no trophies, no gift.
Part of the reason we're increasing the price is because we have things in the pipeline to make this a truly unique event - the NAF's event, with our stamp all over it. The great strength of having our own venue will be that we can offer many things that were not possible at Warhammer World. Lifting of the miniature restriction and the option to eat, sleep and game all on one site are just a couple. Lots of other things are under development to emphasize the community nature of Blood Bowl and NAF, no longer needing to worry about GW's specifications.
So please don't think of this the same old GW event at another venue. It will be much much more and well worth it!

Thinking about it (assuming you don't want to take me up on my offer to ref?), but I need to check my total for next year and/or get a holiday request in.
