Bloodbowl match reports!

Post by squig87 »

I didnt take a camera this year, so I havnt got any pics to show you. But I'll write a report of the tourney instead. I took my undead team hoping to improve on my poor show last year. My aim was top half placing.

First game on Saturday was against some woodelves without any rerolls. It was a great game and my opponent was a great guy, although rather lucky! He scored 1 in the first half with me unable to reply until the second half. I scored quickly and hoped that he would make some mistakes or get bad luck. It took a while but he finally tripped going for it (at last) I scooped up the ball, paced up the field for 2-1.

This took me to about table 30 I think. I played against some Skaven. They didnt really have a clue to be honest. I caused alot of casualties this game much like my previous game. I played saftey BB without taking to many risks. Another great opponent, and a 3-1 win to me.

This propelled me yet furthur up the tables. I played against undead. He took a similar lineup to me but only had 11 players and 4 rerolls. He played well on offense but make some crazy moves that came off, although I managed to stop his TD in similar fashion. He bashed me well and truely and I was two men down for the second half. After some savvy play and sneaky handoffs I managed to score. Then it fell apart, I was tired and thought I had the game in the bag. Slack defense meant that he scored a two turn TD. 1-1.

At this point I was happy. Undefeated in the first day, and on the top row of tables. The second day couldnt possibly be as good.

First game of the day was agaisnt Zy-Noz (although I didnt realise it at the time). He was obviously a seasoned veteran due to his skill choices ( I never even considered strip ball on a ghoul). In the first hald I recieved and after some initial poor play and a lil' bit of bad luck I manged to rectify it with a TD. Second half saw total dominance by Zy-Nox. He out bashed me well and truely and I was down to only a few men to stop his touchdown. Due to some miracle dice I managed to dely his drive for 6 turns! This was vital. I recieved intending to play for the draw amd hide the ball in the corner. I blitzed with a wight in an overly optimistic hope of scoring. When push came to shove, Zy-Nox simply rolled the wrong dice. Doubleskulls by him meant that I could make a short pass to the wight in a TZ, then onedice blitz, dodge on 3+ and go for it twice to score and win. I was totally shell shocked, and didnt understand! I'd won in the most bizzare circumstances.

Game 5 was against Carlos from the Spanish team. He was good, although majory lucky! He managed to injury 4 players in 4 turns in the first half. He played safe, but I felt I could still get something despite my lack of players. End of the first half saw me blow a pickup roll to equalise. Second half was another struggle and I played my heart out. Best BB I've ever played. I managed to hurt a few of his players, but was still outmaned almost 2 to 1. I wriggled into a position to score again, only needed a pickup (with surehands again) and blew it again! That was game over 0-1. A great game but definatly one to forget.

Back a few tables but still on the top row. My final game was against Firebreathers Pro Elves. As the game kicked off I could tell that Firebreather was also a seasoned tourney pro.
A double 1 as the first dice roll I made meant it was 1-0. His blitzers were a real pain, but my Mummys were equally so. I caused many many casualties and KOs and went into half time 1-1. Second half started in my favour with a few more KO's and Casualties. I managed to trot the ball in in turn 16 for 2-1 with only 1 elf left on the pitch. I did feel sorry for firebreather, it was a one sided game luckwise and probably quite boring to be on the recieving end of two really slow, grinding drives.

After sportsmanship points (which were too important to the overall standings) I finished 12th. I had a great weekend and all my opponents were top blokes (in stark contrast to last year!), which is why I was especially chuffed.

The Evesham bloodbowlers did themselves no harm this weekend either, having at least 3 members on the top tables for each round after round 2!

I'm there next year!

Here's a report of how my weekend went:

Game 1

Looking to improve upon a record of 2-4-0 (w-l-d) from last year, my necros started vs Mudlag's Brawlers (orcs). After luckily getting a TD against the kick-off, my boys started the second half in good mood. However, the chances of a 2-0 lead disappeared when my wolf fell over on a gfi in the endzone. The ball then went out of play and eventually ended up in my half with no-one back to defend. The Orcs duly tied it up.

End result: 1-1 (cas:0-1)

Game 2

I was lucky enough to play the coach that finished last at the BB '04! His Dark Elf team, Her Majesty's Hermaphrodites, were no challenge for the necros and the Wolves enjoyed a push-off fest :D

End result: 2-0 (cas:1-0)

Game 3

I have to admit I was surprised to be playing Ogres (Burgerfest) in game 3 :o , but had Ibai's luck been better he would have held me to a draw I think. In the first half the Ogres' luck was so bad that I started to will him to make some better rolls! This was the only match where the necros punched their weight in terms of casualties (4). A fun match.

End result: 2-0 (cas:4-3)

Game 4

Started Sunday feeling distinctly out of place playing on table 10 vs the Lab Rats (skaven) and duly proceeded to lose. The extra bits of luck that I had on Saturday were absent and my opponents skilful play put paid to my challenge. Once again, a wolf fell over near the Endzone. This time a 3 Gutter Runner move saw the ball go from his endzone to mine on turn 7 of the first half for the skavenl lead. This was followed by both my wolves dying on turn 8 :o Unsurprisingly, the rats ran in a second not long after the second half started. I did get myself in touching distance of a consolation score but my Ghoul failed 5 attempts to pick up the ball (he got Sure Hands for the next match!).

End result: 0-2 (cas:2-1)

Game 5

By some distance the best game that I played. Was pleased to see that my opponent was Longshot, and he and his Humans (Red Devils) did not disappoint. The Devils ran into a 1-0 lead, despite some heroic wolf defending and then proceeded to get a second before half time, thanks to a Blitz and some necro ineptitude. Things were not looking too clever. However, a wolf TD reduced the deficit and left enough time for us to be able to equalise if we were lucky. And lucky we were. Blitz was the kick-off result and I was feeling confident. However, when we knocked the ball out of the catcher's hands and it went off the pitch and ended up being caught by an Ogre, it appeared the chance had disappeared. Still we got the ball loose and started turn 8 with a slim chance of a TD. A Ghoul dodged out of a TZ (3+0, picked up the ball in a TZ (4+), dodged out (3+) made the pass (4+), the zombie caught it (4+) and then fell over on the first GFI as his legs rotted too quickly for him to make the Endzone  Still, a very exciting end to a great game:

End result: 1-2 (cas:2:1)

Game 6

The final game saw us line up vs Chaos Dwarves (Soup Team 63). This game was one that saw 7 Chaos Dwarves (including the Mino and both BCs) in the KO box when the necros went ahead. However, just enough came back to allow a hobgoblin to run in an equaliser thanks to some adept Bull Centaur escorting.

End result: 1-1 (cas:1-1)

Overall record: 2-2-2. Postion (including painting etc):101

A big improvement on last year's performance. Here's hoping for more of the same next year.

Thanks to the opponents and those at GW for a great weekend. Good to see that the seating, tables and food were better this year too :D

Cheers

Leip  :o

Here I am.

first Match. vs Torpor.(Skaven)

Bad start my way. Im always scared about fast teams when i play Ogres. I pray nuffle for some casualties to make my goblins an easy way to score but Nuffle was out or something. Skavens scores easy the first TD and i was planning a slowly attack in order to destroy his team.. but no way.. he stoled the ball and scored the second TD in the first half. I was in trouble. In the second half i managed to score fast the first one and make some KOs and 2 cas IIRC. Then.. in the second drive of the second half I stoled the ball and score the draw in the last moment just to give him only a turn to score. Very friendly and tactical game.

2-2

second match. vs Dwarves (The team what was chosen for best painted contest)

Another hard team for my ogres. Hopefully my opponent decides to destroy my ogres better than goblins. Wrong. I danced with my goblins around the field and score a first TD in the moment i wanted. I left 2 turns to him to score.. he was a Dwave... it was hard... but almost he scored.. so for the next time... i going to think this twice :p I started the second half with one ogre and one gobbo less. Anyway in a double skull block he losed one of the cage's corner and i recover the ball. In that moment i win cause my opponent decided to destroy my team hiting and fouling to everybody. I scored the second fast. And.. with two turns left.. i throw my goblin inside his half and managed to score a third one.. just for the fans :p Good luck my way and some mistakes from the other side make this match conditioned.

3-0

Third Game. Leipziger's Necros

I had one objetive for this game... KILL THE WOLVES :D Im regular Necro coach and i know how to play against them.. but... no luck my way. Leipziger hadnt got too much too but i didnt managed to do anything. When I started to make casualties my team was destroyed enough to be nothing more than useless. He managed to sent off the goblins and some ogres with the claws. Clean job :p Anyway, Leipziger was a very good and friendly opponent. I enjoyed the game.

0-2

Fourth Game. Dark Elves (Cnversions from eldars)

Strange game. My opponent.. playing elves focused to block the ogres.. I beat his blitzers and do the ball job with the goblins. My luck was average so i havent problems leaving so much holes with the ogres so.. i can say it was a easy game.

2 -0

Fifth Game. Skaven (The one with the Bell as turnmaker)

Wow... I almost scored in the first turn...AND HE WAS RECEIVING. I just failed picking up the ball beside the end-zone. Then i make a good defence but the GR are so hard to stop and he managed to score in the first half. I didnt make any casualty... so i was expecting a slow attack destroying his team... again i didnt make any casualty but i scored in my last turn taking a draw as good result. I was so happy with this much cause my opponent says me that he never thinked that the ogres can be competitive and he maybe will buy an ogre team

1-1

Sixth Game. Skaven (A young guy)

I was hoping to take a draw like the other 2 skaven teams but... not.. not with the luck in the other player :S I let him to score fast just to make a slow and destroying attack.. again.. but.. FINALLY WORKS :D I make 3 casualties and several KOs. I tried to stall one turn (2 GFI or wait a turn).... but his luck appears in the best moment. 1db to my goblin, RR..my goblin down. Pick Up the ball.. and Stand just besides his end-zone... nasty GR. Anyway... i had my chance..2db to the Blodge GR.. not down.. but i put him inside a 3 goblin wall and the crowd... 2 of the goblins with DT... so.. dodge with 6, dodge with 5... go go go ... pass... works... catch with thrower... 1... RR.. 2.. perfect.. my chance. Blitz the thrower.. pick up the ball with the goblin.. failed and the ball to the crowd. His fans throw the ball near his second GR who managed to score :S 0-2

With his destroyed team i managed to score the 1-2 but i was especting some more from this match.

1-2

The overall was a 2/2/2 so im happy enough with my ogres. Maybe i get some points for the NAF ranking :p And the most important thing.. i saw some friends and make new ones that i hope to see again next year or maybe in another tourney.

My game reports. The first Bloodbowl I played in left me with a 1/2/3 record but I knew I'd improved since then. I took Skaven.

Match 1
Played Scott Baird's Skaven team - an interesting roster faced me, 4 GR, 1 SV, a Rat Ogre and some linerats - and Scott showed early on he was a capable Skaven coach. It was real end-to-end stuff and by turn 7 of the second half he'd just equalised to make it 3-3. I sensed he didn't know about 1 turn TDs from his setup so I tried to show him how to do it!

Everything went perfectly. Except for the last GFI using a re-roll...

Final score 3-3, one of the best games of the weekend.

Match 2
Don't know who this guy was but I believe he was GW staff. He used Pro Elves so I was already dreading the hassle his blitzers would cause! At half time he was 2-0 up but I was still in it and he'd been pretty lucky - despite strip balling his catchers the ball ALWAYS bounced straight back into their hands!!

Anyway, the 2nd half saw a superb recovery and I won the game 3-2. Not the best of games in the end - throwing away a 2 nil lead soured his mood I think - but I felt pleased with my performance!

Match 3
Facing of against Xavi (Kerrunch) of the Spanish team I knew the game would be fun, but hard - he's a very, very good player. Sadly for him his luck deserted him completely. Though I wasn't especially lucky, he was desperately unlucky and in the end I pasted him 5-0. He took my only "classic" award for taking everything with a smile and still enjoying himself.

Match 4
Another tough match, this time against sladmortis. This time my rat's armour proved paper thin and after a few turns he'd effectively knocked me out the game. It wasn't a bad game but when you're not in the match from early on it limits the fun you can ultimately have.

0-2 loss.

Match 5
Though I was well out the running for the main trophy I thought I still had a shot at the Most TDs so I was keen to score a few! I ended up playing a young bloke and his Skaven. What I immediately spotted was his team was an "out the box" team with 3 GR, 2 SV, 2 Thrower and 5 linemen, implying he was relatively rookie. Mid way through the 2nd half I was 3-1 up and about to score a 4th but my luck left me and he pulled back a 2nd. Again I tried a one turn TD, again I failed one a double one.

3-2 win.

Match 6
The final game of the weekend and I needed to score 5 to be in with a chance of most TDs! I was playing an unknown German bloke & his human team so I felt reasonably confident of getting it! After turning him over in the first half I then luckily got a blitz to take it to 2-0. The second half he pulled one back but then I took it to 3-1, followed by another turning over to get 4-1. I was on my way to a fifth but a GR failed another double 1 roll and he recovered enough to score a consolation, finishing it at 4-2

Overall my record was 4/1/1 and much better than 2003. I finished 30th according to GW but after removing the b0ll0cks sportsmanship system I finished 23rd overall, just inside my top 25 aim! I ended up with a respectable 18 TDs.
