minis for everything?

I played a game this past weekend where my opponent informed me that a random human figure would be acting as his "assistant coach" mini. When I asked what he meant he said that he was informed you are supposed to have minis for everything in the game. Haven't seen anything written about this, so was wondering if this was true or just more of a 'recommendation'?

Other than the players on the field, are you supposed to have minis for stuff like apothecaries, coaches, etc?

Your required to have a miniature or each player. It can be anything you want. Your opponent, TO or gw my prefer that is be the race and player described on your roster. But that optional. Everything else is optional. Coaches, cheerleaders, apothecaries or fans....all optional.

Ive seen people play with legos.......they were fun to play against.

As per the Death Zone rulebook, you are required to have a "suitable miniature" in order to Argue the Call. However, nothing in the rulebook defines what a "suitable miniature" is.

If during a game someone were to ask me where my "suitable miniature" is, I would show them my fist. I would tell them that if they did not think it looked like a "suitable miniature" I would gladly give them a VERY close look at it.

The 'suitable miniature' for everything is basically the same as the WYSIWYG miniatures in 40K, where you are supposed to have the exact equipment on your miniature that you have on your army list.
That is just GWs idea of "one mini sold = more cash in our pocket".
In the end, it all depends on what you do agree on with your opponent.
I played BB for about 20ish years now and have never seen an assistant coach. Headcoach? Yes! Apo? Yes! Cheerleader? Yes. I even have a Chaos 'Chain Gang' made for no reason other than fun.

It's just a GW thing to make you buy more figures (which is their job after all).
Only place I've ever heard it being a rule is GW-run league and tournaments, and even there is mainly ignored.

It's not quite the same as that. WYSIWYG is designed for tournaments where you often have 100's of models on each side. If you can't tell what equipment the other side has it can really slow the game down.

It can also open up conflicts where players think the other side gained an advantage or cheated "No the chess pawns with the red dots on their bases are Ork nobz in mega armour, the pawns with the yellow dots are grots".

Are you telling me that you actually see what kind of grenade a Space Marine has glued to his belt?
That was why I was banned from a GW tournament: My Space Marines didn't have the grenades and the Seargent didn't have the Auspex.

Whilst the Space marine range does have different types of grenades that you could use for melta bombs, frag and krak they never went that far at UK tournaments. The rules expressly excluded such small things.

Obvious stuff like jump packs, power swords and melta guns were included. Whilst for fantasy things like shields and bows, you could use other hand weapons in place of magic swords as long as it looked suitably magical but not for weapons with different rules like lances.
