How to beat a Vampire who reminds you of Mork 'N Thork

Post by Tore »

Hi All. This is my first post so please bear with me.

We're playing the semi-finals of oru local Spike Tournament tonight, and my Human Team are surprisingly in it. I risk facing Dark Elves, Chaos or Vampires. I can handle the first two teams - on a good day . But the Vampire Team scares the bejeezus out of me, because of their nasty Lord.

His roster:
Vampire Lord - ST 6 block
Vampire - block
Vampire - block
Vampire - block
Vampire
Thrall - Block
7xThralls - no skills
TR - approx. 145
RR - 2

My Roster:
Blitzer - M 8, block, shadowing
Blitzer - block, tackle, guard
Blitzer - block
Thrower - strong arm, accurate
Catcher - blodge, sidestep
Catcher - blodge
2xLinemen - block
Lineman - block, kick
Lineman - tackle (this "used" to be an AG-league)
2x Linemen - unskilled
Ogre - block
TR- 167
RR - 3

I'm o.k. for offense. I can usually get a catcher or a blitzer to TD. But I'm not too sure on my defense. How do I stop the Vampire Lord once he has the ball? Should I even bother?

Any last minute help would be greatly appreciated.

To be honest, I've not really got a clue... but to get us going:

What version of Off For A Bite is your league using?

Currently we're using the Rules from BB-mag X (Can't remember the issue). I.e. Vampires are OFAB on a roll of 1-3, and ready for the next drive. The Lord doesn't have OFAB.

We're considering changing the rules for OFAB, to make the Vamps less powerful, but that's for next season.

Does this help you?

Erm, not really - I was hoping you might be using the experimental "COFAB" version developed here... then you might have a chance since it makes the vampires less reliable once they are on the pitch.

I think I'll have to hand this one over to someone who has actually successfully beaten a vampire team - I'm afraid I never have done.

Thanks anyway Martyn.

In case anyone else doesn't know about COFAB - and are reading this thread - check out this link : viewtopic.php?t=2939&highlight=cofab

Try and take out the thralls - leave the gross Vamp alone. If you get a drive where a lot of the vamps don't show, then get rid of as many thralls as possible (av 7, no skills on most and no apoth). Then go after the Lord and foul him if you get him down.... oh and score on turn 8 of the drive! ;-)

Put your Ogre up against either a standard Vamp or a thrall - don't go after the Lord.

Make your oppo roll dice - AG 4 will mean dodges fail on a 1 - try and use up his rerolls.

That said even 3 or 4 Vamps on their own can score TDs - this is where you need to have used up his rerolls.

Don't get into a fight against the Vamps until you have reduced his numbers - you will need to get lots of players out of position to lend assists so don't try.

That said - its going to be mighty tough!

Sounds pretty reasonable Dave.

Just one clarifying question:
Make your oppo roll dice - AG 4 will mean dodges fail on a 1 - try and use up his rerolls.
Are you suggesting a couple of Two Linemen vs. One Vampire scenarios?

If I was the Vamp coach, I'd be using the lord as the main ballcarrier. Do you have any Dauntless to go after him with?

Thanks for all the good advice, but I lost the game. My thrower fumbled a crucial pass to take the game into overtime. Better luck next time.

And with no dauntless and the Lord carrying the ball, there wasn't much I could do in the end.

Did get a lot of thralls out of the game.
