Undead: do they compete well in long-term leagues?

Post by Auciello »

Hi, I'm a 3rd edition player who hasn't been to the tabletop in more than a decade. So, I'm really out of step with the evolution of Blood Bowl since the start of the LRB/CRP.

I've caught up a little by playing the BB2 video game, and I've read some of the CRP as I get ready for the new box set. I like a lot of what I see in the current version of BB, but a few things make me wonder about how some teams will fare in league play.

One thing I've noticed playing Undead and Necromantic in a handful of online BB2 games is that those teams feel really vulnerable to me. Now, my games are just a small sample size, but after about 6 matches, I've had 3 ghouls killed by blocks, and Regeneration feels like it isn't keeping my teams protected.

None of that means there's an imbalance. But I wonder: are Undead and Necro viable choices in long-term leagues given the lack of Apothecary and Regeneration at 4+ ?

Regeneration is great, actually better than the apothecary. It works all the time and has the same change of avoiding a long term injury. The ghouls are weak, but the rest makes up for it.

Your problem is guard. Long term you don't have the strength access.

They said, there still pretty phenominal.

TOs! You do not need multiple copies of rosters. It's a waste of paper.

Undead are one of the best teams to use in resurrection style tournaments or short term leagues. You can get pretty much all you need for the 1 million starting gold, most of your team has regen and you can recruit free zombies during games and keep them in leagues.

Unless you are super unlucky or using the bank rules then you'll quickly end up with more spare cash than you know what to do with so can easily replace skeletons and posititionals.

Ghouls are a weak spot, so treat them like runners or catchers, protect them from bashy players especially with tackle, but don't be afraid to sacrifice them if it will win you the game. They skill up pretty quickly and start with MA7 and dodge which can help keep them out of trouble.

Where undead do suffer a little is above 1750 TV, unless you get lucky with stats or doubles you will find yourself getting out-guarded by bash teams and beaten up, whilst agile teams will run rings around you and have the skills or subs to keep enough bodies on the pitch to win. Even so they are still above average and can weather down turns better than most teams with the aforementioned mass regen and free players.

Guard zombies are awesome as are +stat ghouls a great too (AG, ST and MA over AV) so look after them.

What supbbbba said, and:

With straight Undead you have durable, cheap zombie linemen/markers; slightly faster cheap skeletal linebacker/specialist wrestle/dp/kickers; a couple of non-restricted, MiB big guys; two servicable blitzers; and four speedy a/g access runners....

Given flexibility, speed and toughness, this team is a killer out of the box....

With Necros, you lose scrumming ability while gaining speed and an initially unreliable, but entertaining, shredder/remover.... Necros, if avoiding casualties, come into their own around six games ....
