Hypnotic Gaze vs Sidestep - We stumped the NAFC Refs!

Post by Marlow »

Salutations Folks,

We managed to stump the refs at NAF Champs yesterday as they could not agree if a player who has been affected by Hypnotic Gaze can use Side Step when being pushed back. Does it count as voluntarily moving? Similarly can a player use Stand Firm if gazed?

You didn't ask this ref....

SS does not need an active tackle zone to work, and being pushed is not moving voluntarily, so I'd say you can use SS is you have been hypno gazed.

TOs! You do not need multiple copies of rosters. It's a waste of paper.

Short answer - yes, a Gazed player can use SS/SF.

I felt it was in the 'ambiguous / not clearly specified' category.

So being pushed is passive, but sidestepping is active since it involves movement to a chosen square. With the rules unclear (sometimes happens with unusual combinations like this) we suggested a 4+ to resolve it.

the faq gives the answer....

"Players under influence of Bone-head, Really Stupid, or Hypnotic
Gaze cannot use skills that allow them to move voluntarily. Which skills
are not allowed to be used as they are considered moving voluntarily?
A: Skills that allow you to leave your square without being forced to leave
your square in the first place. These skills are Diving Tackle, Pass Block,
and Shadowing."

How is it ambiguous? The FAQ directly asks which skills involving moving the player cannot be used with (among other things) Hypno Gaze in effect and gives a definitive list. Sidestep is not on that list.
