Another update

The question is, markings. Should I paint on regular markings or rather use painted (a dirty white) hemp thread, pulled taut between small wooden dowels to make the center line and end zone markings?

It's just my opinion but thread would probably look strange, esspecially when not lying don flat.
Would be more like tripwire than markings.

Just painting them on would be better.
But maybe you could use are more fitting color than white that is still visible enough.

Beautiful!

You don't need markings. It's obvious where the centre, wide zones and end zones are already.

I totally agreed with Fold. I thought part of the whole point or idea of building the pitch the way you have (with the sunken water ducts as the wide zones) was to negate the need to mark out the pitch's wide and end zones. Lovely work btw

The end zones are a bit less clear (and middle line, but not so much) than wide zones. Cotton thread or fine wool with paint could work if laid in the cracks of the center part and flying over water, or just on surface (stream effects then?), in the sides.

Thank you. I was thinking about that as well. How much do I need markings.

I tried the wire and it does not work.

I will try a trail of small rocks/brick debris to see if that works.

I personally would not need the additional markings, but I'm still trying to include them in a way that does not disrupt the overall appearance.

Here are some higher quality photographs showing, in more detail, how the rusty grates turned out.

I started pouring in the acrylic water mass. It's a slow process but the results are looking promising so far

Then what about also trail of dirty water, an old wood stick, a pipe, part of a rope, segment of chain, long rag, some moss, creepy roots, maybe a snake or bones... So it's not all small rocks/debris.

Actually having counted squares I can see what I thought were the end zones are outside the pitch boundary. I thought the end zones were IN the tunnels and across the line marked by the row of smaller stones - I expect without markings people may think the same.

My suggestion then is a row of rusty metal spikes stuck in the ground, perhaps one every 3 squares - with skulls and other dungeon trophies impaled on.

I don't think the centre needs marking.

I also thought that the tunnels etc were the endzones and when I count, they are.

I don't see any need for marking anything to be honest.
It's perfect as it is

:-? The tunnels and the squares between them is not the end zone, the first line in front is (or I need to visit the optician). The other option would be filling with garbage and debris those squares so they stop being "playable".

Also, matt black for the tunnels could make them look "infinite".

Good I'm not going crazy! Was starting to question if a pitch half was more than 13 squares!

So I still stick by the row of stakes/spikes idea. That works in the sewer parts too, they would just be slightly submerged.

Just counted again and I now see what you mean

Then the field needs some kind of endzone marking

I reckon this would work really well for the centre line as you could make it look like dirty water came up out of the grid in the centre of the pitch and then drained to the sides in the crack between the tiles along the LoS.

I finally found some time, as well as a solution for the end zone markings.

Here is the result.

I decided to add a trail of debris, pieces of wood and moss. Will add some small bits of rope here and there and with that I'm quite happy that I found a solution for those markings. Now on to the turn counters
