ORIGINAL POST
Here I will post pics of the Middle Kingdoms Elfball Team that I am painting up for the Mansfield 2010 Elfball Tournament, being held in October.
Just in case you missed the thread, these models are what you will win for First Prize in the tourney, courtesy of Impact! Miniatures.
They only arrived yesterday, so there's not much to show at the mo.
The whole team, assembled, cleaned up, filled and based:-
The two Cyclops' (I have done some minor conversion work on one of them, so that they can be told apart)
I will keep posting to this thread as work progresses. Next step will be to paint up a single model to test out the colour scheme.

Re: Middle Kingdoms Team - WORK IN PROGRESS
I'll be watching this thread with interest. A long term project of mine at the moment is painting up some Middle Kingdom models for a friend who's using them in his Chaos Pact team, so it's nice to see someone else's WIP I can can use for reference.

Re: Middle Kingdoms Team - WORK IN PROGRESS
Basic colour scheme on a Midfielder:-
No shading or highlighting yet, just the basic colours to see how it works, with a single wash on the flesh and the legs to add depth.
I think I'll finish this model to completion before starting on the rest, so I can see how it looks with all the layers and highlights added.
Chris
Cheers I_P, I'll try to keep this thread pretty well updated, but I'm a fast painter so will need to pause every now and again to take photos
I'm a bit undecided on the red crest on the helmet - I'm toying with doing it white or yellow. Although yellow might make the model look a bit two-tone.
I've already decided that the weapon needs extending up to his elbow, like a metal sleeve.

Re: Middle Kingdoms Team - WORK IN PROGRESS
I think having the crest the same colour as the trousers would make it look more cohesive and better than it does now (tho when you have finished painting it that may make all the difference to make the red work)

Re: Middle Kingdoms Team - WORK IN PROGRESS
You may be right, Grum - the beauty of it is, I can change it right at the end if it doesn't look right
Ok, this is the same model, killed with ink washes:
I know a lot of people think shading by ink washes is lazy, but I still find it one of the most efficient ways of doing it.
Just for fun, I painted the elfball whilst waiting for the ink to dry!
And then, applied the base coat again, leaving all the deep dark recesses in shadow:-
First stage of highlights to follow.

Re: Middle Kingdoms Team - WORK IN PROGRESS
Ok getting close to finished now....
First stage highlights added:-
And the second stage highlights (although after this layer the legs already look too light - I think I'll need to put a glaze on them to tone them down a bit)
And then since blue is the predominant colour, that gets a third stage highlight, and the eyes are dotted in:-
All that's left is a thin glaze on the legs, adding some "sporty" stripes, and doing the base - I'll be back in an hour!

Re: Middle Kingdoms Team - WORK IN PROGRESS
Looking good so far!
I will be watching closely as I have just ordered some Middle Kingdoms minis from Impact! myself.
Hoping they arrive soon as I'm meant to be having a game with them on Thursday!

Re: Middle Kingdoms Team - WORK IN PROGRESS
Right, only took half an hour
Final (almost) shots:-
I have added a very thin glaze of yellow ink to the legs, and a thin glaze of blue ink to the blue areas, which has softened all the highlights nicely. I've also painted the helmet crest yellow, but still not sure on that - I think maybe the red worked better as a spot colour. The crest isn't highlighted yet, until I decide what I'm doing.
The grass on the base isn't quite dry, which is why it looks like a splat of grass, rather than a tuft
1 player down, 11 to go!
Thanks for all the comments - I'll update periodically with the rest of the team

Re: Middle Kingdoms Team - WORK IN PROGRESS (PIC HEAVY)
Cos it's stuck down with PVA glue, and it stays flat until its dry, when it sticks up bed-hair style.
And that wasn't quick, it was slowed down by stopping to take photos and upload them! It's only one model.
Hoping to have the whole team done by Thursday

Re: Middle Kingdoms Team - WORK IN PROGRESS (PIC HEAVY)
thought I used pva glue when I last used static grass and its still flat
do you just sprinkle it on rather than press it on with a finger or something and then as it dries it will "stand up" by itself?

Nice job, like the colour scheme and have to say your helping sell those models to me as wasn't a big fan when they first came out.
Grum - try blowing gently across the base, that normally helps the grass stand up.

Re: Middle Kingdoms Team - WORK IN PROGRESS (PIC HEAVY)
Sprinkle it on, under no circumstances feel tempted to press it down. Turn the model upside down and flick the underside of the base to lose the excess. When it's dry it sticks up.
It really does work.
Cookie, the models are great. Really impressed with them ”in the flesh”. When this tournament is done I will probably be buying a set for myself.
Got base coat of blue on all 11 remaining models now. Stay tuned.
