They have a few minis from a couple of smaller companies I like.

Anyone use this retailer? If so, were they any good?

USA I think, but the guy who runs it is from the far east IIRC.

Nice book, shame about the site.

it's just rubbish. too many people scared to offend someone by saying a crap mini is crap and the "establishment" of regular painters and forum contributors like to run around applauding each others work, insulting and degrading anyone who dares speak out.

bunch of arseholes over there, I never bother with it any more.

it might just be my experience of it. others probably have no trouble. But I posted on the forums asking why so many people seemed to vote so highly for models that were clearly poorly painted I was yelled at for hurting feelings, not promoting new painters etc. They then mobbed together and lowered the marks minis I'd posted on there had received. One was pro painted for me by someone else and it looks stunning - it was at 9.8 then within a week of me posting it was down to 6.5 or so. what's the point of it...

WOW... What a load of Horses#!t... How can you possibly improve if you don't let people be honest about your work. Criticism isn't always a bad thing. If these guys were painters worth their spit, you figure they'd know that. DONKEYS!

i posted some of my painted mini at this site , too. I always voted minis of other painters without checking the vote of other before...
But its true, there are some bad guys, i read some real bad comments. ... and it seems to me, there is a small underground war of No Metall paint use or not...

Still i´m visiting this site because some of the shown minis are just great.

It's a good place to look at minis and get ideas, but unless you do certain things (being "known" helps also, don't expect to get good ratings). The things to do are:

- Paint Confrontation minis... that's worth at least +1 to +2 to your score.
- If not, paint GW minis... preferably space marines, as the GW fanboys
will vote you up. Don't paint specialist/fanatic game minis as these
don't have the fanbase to swell your ranking.
- Paint in NMM - sky/earth reflective style... if a single drop of metallic
paint touches your mini, you are a BAD painter  , so don't
let it happen.
- Finally if you aren't a good photographer, don't even post as even
the slightest fuzziness will get you bad reviews...

I have seen nicely painted Reaper/Crocodile Games/etc minis get barely "tabletop" quality ratings (5-6) while space marines who look like they were painted with a piece of sandpaper will get a 6.5... the articles can be great, the guides can be really helpful, but the mini rating system is first and foremost a popularity contest.

Okay.

But the question remains... is it okay to order minis from them?

I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that New Wave fills all their orders... for this reason I've never ordered from them. (see the New Wave sticky post for why).

I don't know for sure, but New Wave doesn't carry any of the lines that cool mini or not do. Tell you what, I'll start a post on dakka dakka and ask if anyone's had problems with Cool mini's.
