Monthly Poll: How did you first learn the Blood Bowl game?

Post by faust_33 »

Last month the poll question was "Is Blood Bowl Tabletop "New Player Friendly"?". Answers were fairly split, 55% said "yes" and 45% said "no".

This month we have a related question "How did you first learn the Blood Bowl game?". Specifically the rules, as for most of us, the strategy of the game comes a bit later. If I don't have an option that fits, feel free to select "Other" and write in a reply.

Someone bought a copy of 1st edition into college for our "complementary studies" session (i.e. lecturers not wanting to teach for 3 hours) and played it there, though had to wait till 2nd edition to own and play regularly.

Friend had the 1st edition bought for a present. I played against him a lot. I've played ever since.

TOs! You do not need multiple copies of rosters. It's a waste of paper.

Played a bastard form of 2nd edition using rules my buddy tried to remember. I liked it and then met the kid who actually had the box set. LOVED it! I then bought my own box and taught my friends how to play. They bought a box and we played until beer/sports/girls started happening and then we took about a ten plus year break. My buddy saw the 3rd edition box one day and bought it. Been playing a little bit here and there to this day.

Bought First Ed when I was in college. Played countless games, and kept playing it even after I bought Second Ed and didn't like it much.

Switched to Third when it came out and been plating ever since (with some substantial gaps...)

Too difficult to answer with one! Learned 2nd Ed with friends, then taught ourselves 3rd Ed from rulebook.

Saw some people playing 3rd ed in a college gaming club, asked, was taught, joined the league. So "Friend taught me in person".

As of right now, "Randomly decided to read the rulebook on my own" is leading the pack with an absolute majority (55%). Which is shocking to me but I guess that's the point of polling ...

didn't play until 3rd edition, learnt from rulebook, didn't get all the rules correct, going to a tournament was an eye-opener!

If you originally learned 2nd Ed with friends, then that would mean 'Friend taught me in person'.

Yea, that's pretty surprising to me too. With my background in roleplaying games and what I knew of American Football, I had a hard time getting my head around 'this weird game from the UK'. I don't think I could have picked up the rulebook and taught myself the game, too many things I would have got wrong.

Does that not imply that the friend already knew the rules? Taught means he had something to teach, after all. I went for "rulebook" for exactly that reason: there were two of us, and we learned it together.

Well, for me 2nd Ed and 3rd Ed are basically different games.

Like Mike I played 2nd edition with my friends not sure who read the rules first.
I came back to BB with BB16 after playing on cyanides iPad version quite a bit. I think the iOS game taught me modern BB by and large.

I remember the specialist games rules all went up online at one point. My friends played 40k at that point and we read them. Blood bowl was our favourite of the lot.

I clicked read the rule book, as technically that was how I first learnt, with 2nd ed and a teenage son.

Recently returned to B.B. and was “retaught” by friends at the club

I'm curious what comes under other.

Did these people emerge from the womb already possessing an encyclopedic knowledge of the game?
