Weather counters for forgetful coaches

Post by plasmoid »

Hi all,
being no longer a teenager, I find that I occasionally forget the non-central stuff. Like a bribe. Or Bloodweiser Babes. Or the weather.
Recently I got a neat idea for weather counters, that I'm quite happy with, so I'm posting up my first prototypes here for inspiration.

Anyway, a friend of mine has for quite some time used a larger base with the ball on it, to show where the ball is, Like this:

This gave me the idea to make ball-base-weather counters, in order to have a visual reminder of the weather right in the middle of the action.
This works especially well for pouring rain, very sunny and to some extent blizzard, since the specifically affect ball movement. But like I said a visual reminder for sweltering heat (and some of the blizzard effects) is still nice to have.

So here they are:

Nice weather.

Blizzard and sweltering heat.

Cheers
Martin

Sorry, I have to steal this idea!

What size is your larger base?

I have a "ball base" and they were made from GW 30mm bases, but these would (imo) need a slightly bigger one (which is a slight concern for me as it might make the pitch a little crowded).
I still use the acrylic weather tokens I got from Impact many years ago, but I do like these.

Hmm - 30mm bases like above, but with colour coding on the edges (white=blizzard, blue=rain, yellow=sun, orange=heat). Might suggest this to my mate that likes doing this sort of thing.

I really like the idea, very sunny is the toughest to do since it doesn't really impact the pitch.

Maybe an alternative could be a snotling sun bathing with shades on?

Thanks for the kind words :D
Ksprbgh is the guy that made these for me (take a bow :D) - but I did just measure them, and they're 40mm across.
Darkson - nice idea about the color coded edges. I've also considered writing the special rules in shorthand along the base. Though perahps it might look better to instead let the basing go over the edge and all the way down to the bottom.

A word of advice to anyone trying this - remember that the weather effect has to be visible on the part of the base not occupied by the player. We'll have to redo the 'very sunny' one on that account.

Cheers
Martin
