There's always a lot of discussion on which Blood Bowl teams are too ... something. Too strong (a.k.a. broken), too weak, too good at low TV, or high (or vice versa, too bad at low/high TV), too good at (resurrection) Tournaments, or rather at Leagues, too boring, or too random etc etc.

So I was wondering, which teams are considered to be properly balanced, fun to play and play against, solidly good without overpowering at any point: in other words, 'just right'?

My thought: Undead and Necro. They have some really good players (Mummies/Werewolves), but to make them truly amazing they need a double (for Block/Mighty Blow). Flesh Golems are good blockers, but you only have two of them. The team has Regeneration, but their most fragile players (Ghouls) don't, nor can they an Apo to save their skin. Most players are pretty decent but nothing special (Whights/Ghouls), while the lineman are inflexible (low Ag/Mv) but cheap and fairly resilient. Undead are slightly better in Tourneys and short Leagues, while Necro shine in longer Leagues, but the difference isn't huge. All in all, I think these teams are what Nuffle intended.

So, what do you people think about this?

I think Undead belong on a different list.

Humans will probably be the most mentioned team for this. I would include Highelves as well.

Orcs, Lizardmen, Dark Elves, Skaven.

Most teams arent far off to be honest.

I’d say Skaven are the best exampleof this.

They are competitive at all TV ranges, the gutters, throwers and linemen are useful even as rookies, they come with normal access to all the skill categories aside from mutations and they have some good stars so are a threat when underdogs.

They are nice and squishy too so even if they trash you 5-0 you can usually guarantee a few spp’s from cas. Saying that with some doubles you can make them pretty deadly too with a clawpomb vermin or 2.

The only drawback is the overpriced and rubbish rat ogre and the ease of making lame 1 turners.

I’d put Pro elfs in there too. They are probably the weakest of the elven teams at high TV but then the other 3 elf teams are seen as being too good at winning 1 off games.

I disagree about Undead as they are one of the best rookie teams, especially in short leagues but steadily get more average as their Tv goes up. If fouling hadn’t been so nerfed they’d be more viable at higher TV. Necros are weaker than undead at the start, as good at mid TV (potentially better with min/max lameness) and as mediocre at high TV. They have the added drawback of the super expensive werewolves that everyone wants to kill and the golems are expensive too but take forever to skill up.

I'll throw in for some teams people might not mention -

Goblins - I think they are nearly perfect and win/lose about what they should. The only small tweak I want is to let them cheat - thematic! - and choose to start fewer than 11 players for any drive. Having your opponents get to choose when you bring in your Secret Weapons by bashing everyone, then holding out until turn 8 is not much of a 'secret'.

Khemri - I know most think they are rubbish, especially since they were amazing before with 4 Mummies but I find they play like dusty old pharoahs and skeletons should. I'm playing my 4th season with them locally and have made the league semi-finals twice. They win/lose at about the rate they should - the only small tweaks I would like are Thick Skull on all 4 Ras for the same cost, and swap Decay for Break Tackle on the Guardians for +20K.

I know this is not a "How Would You Fix Team X" thread, I just wanted to say how close I think Goblins and Khemri are to perfect (to me) but I'll keep playing them as is. :D

Underworld - Live fast, die young, leave a mutated corpse. I wouldn't change these guys at all.

I'm not sure how relevant it is, but Azure just won a Box major with a skaven team built around a super star rat ogre.

Yeah....but Azure is a freak though. I wouldn't compare the average blood bowler to him. I feel lucky if I tie him.

Any team coached by me becomes Tier 3 at that point.

If you cannot stall out for an 8 turn drive to score with dwarves then really you need to go and play canasta with your dad...if you can find him.

I like chaos, but that is where most of my experience is from. AG 3 is not bad, horns makes the three dice blocks more likely, move 6 on beastmen is not to bad for a str 4 blitzer, and the skill selection is really strong. The lack of AG4 and the 6 movement keeps chaos from playing the passing game and turning into scary bashy skaven

Agreed, wholeheartedly.

I'd like to see tweaks to humans and possibly norse, and an amazon overhaul. I'm with Chance on the Khemri changes. Otherwise, I think most teams are basically there As Is.

Underworld, Nurgle, Orcs, Skaven, (Wood/High/Dark/Pro) Elves, (Notmal/Chaos) Dwarfs, Slann in particular are really nicely designed.

I think Dark Elves are a bit over powered... either that or they just happen to suit my style of play. I hardly ever lose a game with DE.

I think Chaos are very balansed. Difficult to win games with them at low TV, but it can be done with some great coaching and a few prayers to Nuffle.

I feel dark elves and chaos are similar, early they kinda struggle, but eventually they become powerhouses (blodge, ss for darkies and mass cpomb for chaos) therefore I don't think any of them overpowered.

Agree with others that most teams are just right.

Shteve> Whats wrong with norse? I think that after the addition of Ulfs and the snowtroll they are a pretty well designed team - pure glass cannons.
