Re: Granny Wendy finally did it

Post by Hucker73 »

Okay, possibly stupidest / most naïve post of the year so far, but why don't we just ask GW if we (NAF/TFF/whoever) can host the CRP rules?

No-one will be making money off it, we acknowledge GW has the IP rights, and if they agree it automatically green lights the LRB 6.0 Icepelt version being hosted too.

Worst case scenario, they say no, but at least they'll be in a dialogue with us and we can reason / negotiate / argue with them.

They clearly couldn't give a flying you-know-what and crazy over-zealous C&D lawyer is gone, so I don't think they'd say no.

Thoughts?

Just had a quick look at the Icepelt version and as far as I can see, there's no copyright or trademark info included (only checked the first and last pages tho') which would probably be enough for GW to object to it's distribution. Nothing stopping that from being added tho'.

This has already gone on. Lycos posted on the NAF forum that he has contacted GW, and is waiting to hear back from a certain representative that was unavailable last week.

Well, it was never cross-posted here, so it's a good thing someone brought it up.

Here is the post from the NAf forum:
Lycos wrote:I have had two 30 min conversations with GW this week following the launch of their new website. Ultimately I need to speak to someone who was not in the week just past. I have made the committee aware of the progress and I suspect some comments will be made soon.

I will say this; there is a little bit of leaping to conclusions at this stage. I have been told there is more content to come on the site but they had to launch at some point and they would add more as they go.

'More content' wise, they left out all the resources for the core games, notably the FAQ's, they are a priority and other stuff will follow in due course.

As has been noted by others before, all old docs have vanished in the past week. I don't know if the server has been purged or they are on a new one and the old one is gone. It would be interesting to see what GW resources are still knocking around in onion space though.

SG's rule pdf's may get added again, Jerv always wanted games like that to be free to play for those interested in something different. And the games as they stand, certainly BB, Mordheim, Inq28 and Necromunda, generate small sales of product that may in turn lead to larger sales in the core systems, and removing non profitable SG mini's supports this small be noteworthy pattern.
I am not holding my breath on that though. I suspect keeping them gone opens the door for a more profitable use of the concepts. Space Hulk proved that a splash release of a good concept can make money, and that players will be happy with zero support provided the box is spangley enough.

Again, as I've said before, any new release of BB will not be similar to the CRP rules but will be a self contained game. CRP has its place, and the NAF having had a good relationship with GW down the years are best placed to negotiate hosting the competition rules rather than any future pick up and play game GW release.

Time alone will tell.

Agreed, but how long are we prepared to leave it before we do something? 6 months? A year? Longer?

If GW decide to not host the specialist games rules anymore and forbid anyone else from hosting them (y'know, because they're crazy enough to do that) what do we do then?

(Yes, worst case scenario / probably won't happen, but it is a possibility, so why not be prepared, just in case?)

Well it depends on your perspective of "well". If "well" is the status quo, then I would agree with you.

Here's a plan. It has drawbacks, but it is a plan.

We all host it. We put CRP everywhere. Dropbox, personal blogs, groups, websites etc. Would Granny really care/bother to stop it?

Yes it does. But it doesnt tell you that it has happened so no one seems to be aware.
Yeah ^ it does install it via a link on your aplicantions folder but it does not give any link when you open the game from the client. To my amazement people play the game without viewing the rules, but it is on every install. I recall LRB 5 was on the first game and LRB6 for all later versions.

Back on topic they still own the IP and proabbaly have no need or care to change that. Mordheim will be interesting which is due for another life in a PC game. Mordheim can be played with all the figs from normal Warhammer so it will be fun seeing if they consider some love for it in a few years
