This is a little rule we will probably be using in our next
BB league.
When one of your players is about to get a new skill,
first normally choose the skill he will try to get.
Now roll a D6 to see if he gets the skill.
If you can't get the skill, choose another skill and roll the
dice again. Repeat this until you roll succesfull.
Use the table below:
Number of tries . . . . Roll required to get skill
1. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4+ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
2. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3+ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
3. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2+ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
4+. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2+ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
If the player rolled doubles, he may:
a) Choose any skill from his normal skill categories,
without rolling a dice to see if he gets it.
b) Try to get a skill from a category he normally wouldnt
have access to. Use the table above to see if he gets
the skill, but add a +1 modifier to the dice roll.
I think this rule would be good because otherwise too many players are
gettin just blocks, blocks, blocks, dirty players, dirty players and so on...
What do you people think?

It's interesting, but if you think some other skills are better, why not start taking them? For example, not many coaches think much of Safe Throw as an early skill for a thrower. But if you have it, you never worry about interceptions. Or take Pass Block. Get two or three of these players on the same team and watch the opposition's passing game grind to a halt.
It's a good house rule for enforcing diversity, but I think displaying the usefulness of certain skills and combos on the field is a surer way to get coaches to branch out.
Cheers!

In a league I used to play, we also had a way to randomize skills.. We picked three skills and rolled a d4. On a 1, 2 or 3 you'd get the respective skill. On a 4 you could choose any of the three.
Gave some diversity to players but these days we're just picking skills as usual. With time, you learn that diversity is useful without it being forced on you, so you develop players differently...
